Safe or Out: Instant Replay in the MLB
It is now that last play of the game there are already two outs there is a player on the third base, the batter hits the ball ball with all his strength, the player from third is trying to make it to home plate as fast as he possibly can. The right fielder then throws the ball into the catcher's glove, the catcher touches the runner and... "YOU'RE OUT!" The game is over. Even though the entire stadium crowd and the ones watching the game live on T.V knew the runner was safe, he is still out the game is over. Now this could have been the winning run, but because of the blown call, the entire season had gone on for nothing. This problem could have been easily debated or fixed with the implication of instant replay. Instant replay should be implemented in baseball to help uncover all questionable plays in baseball.
In the world of baseball there is always one topic that raises everyones opinion; should Major League Baseball take advantage of instant replay to review all the close calls made by umpires? The use of Instant replay is already being used in baseball, However only on a limited basis. Under the current baseball rules, the only reviews that can take place are those including home runs, by making sure that the hit was fair, that the ball actually left the field, and that there was no fan interference taking place. There are some baseball fans that believe that because technology continuous to advance and is becoming cheeper, that there is no reason not to implement the use instant replay in the Major League of Baseball. There are also those who still argue that baseball needs to keep the “human element” of it’s system and start to fear that instant replay would cause the ...

...e call to make it correct. This will decrease the number of arguments between the managers and umpires, meaning fewer managers ejected.
Some are also against instant replay because enjoy the beauty of the “human element” in baseball, where the calls are made by umpires who “call it like they see it.” Using instant replays in these situations will not completely eliminate this element from the game. Umpires would still have the only say on ball-strike calls.
Instant replay will clean up the game of baseball. Expanding its use to include calls such as safe or out, fair or foul, and whether or not a catch was made will make sure that games are not decided by a questionable call, it will improve the league’s image, and it will hold umpires accountable for the calls that they make, all without making the game take much longer or taking away its human element.
First, instant replay allows a referee to review the previous play in an NFL game. It was in use from 1986-1991 and was experimented with in the recent 1999 season.
Critics say that it takes away from the way the game is supposed to be played. The rule, actually brings out the pureness of the game. It lets the hitters concentrate on hitting and the pitchers on pitching.
Baseball statistics are meant to be a representation of a player’s talent. Since baseball’s inception around the mid-19th century, statistics have been used to interpret the talent level of any given player, however, the statistics that have been traditionally used to define talent are often times misleading. At a fundamental level, baseball, like any game, is about winning. To win games, teams have to score runs; to score runs, players have to get on base any way they can. All the while, the pitcher and the defense are supposed to prevent runs from scoring. As simplistic as this view sounds, the statistics being used to evaluate individual players were extremely flawed. In an attempt to develop more specific, objective forms of statistical analysis, the idea of Sabermetrics was born. Bill James, a man who never played or coached professional baseball, is often credited as a pioneer in the field and for coining the name as homage to the Society of American Baseball Research, or SABR. Eventually, the use of Sabermetrics became widespread in the Major Leagues, the first team being the Oakland Athletics, as depicted in Moneyball. Bill James and other baseball statisticians have developed various methods of evaluating a player performance that allow for a more objective view of the game, broadly defined as Sabermetrics.
Growing up I was a catcher, and the rules that I learned my freshman year were not the rules that I followed by my senior year. Freshman year I was allowed to stand at home plate. The rule had changed for me having to stand in front of home plate and avoid any type of unnecessary contact with the runner. These new rules took effect because of the many players that were injured during collisions at home plate that have resulted in major injuries. During a game my freshman year, a batter hit the ball deep into the outfield, causing my team the need to relay the ball into me. As I got the ball the runner was getting closer and closer to me while not slowing down while I am waiting for her to reach home plate. Ultimately we collided and though she was unharmed, I developed a concussion and had to sit out for the rest of the
Right now in America, the world of sports is constantly changing and growing to make the sport safer and fairer. People want sports to be as exciting and thrilling as before, but without the human error that may turn some baseball fans away. Along with this fear, people also want every sport to be as fair as possible, and by doing this most sports have incorporated an instant replay rule. This spring will be the first time that the review rule will be in effect, it is a radical decision and game changing because baseballs history is so rich and its structure has not been changed in so long. These changes are not without skepticism though because people believe that the game has been so successful and that being “fair” was not the biggest priority of the game.
...done. Many people were involved, whether intentionally or not. Trust and respect for the beloved American game was lost and even today the blame is controversial. The extent of everyone’s part in the conspiracy and the real effect of the damage may never be known with many unanswered questions. Were some of the best players in baseball history banned for life? Should their ban have been dropped if the court did not find them guilty? The one player who did not confess offered these words: “I am going to meet the greatest umpire of all—and He knows I’m innocent.”
Ever since the beginning of baseball players have been trying to bend the rules in order to give themselves a competitive edge over their opponent. Even people who do not watch baseball know about players 10 years ago using steroids and players just this year using biogenesis, but not many people realize that there is still cheating going on.
Baseball has been of the longest living sports in our world today. The game started with the idea of a stick and ball and now has become one of the most complex sports known in our society. Several rules and regulations have been added to help enhance the game for everyone. Although baseball has endured several issues during its history and development of the game the game has still been a success throughout the world.
Baseball is a part of the past, present and future. Unfortunately for two unlucky teams, the future is as bleak as the cold January mornings in State College. Ever since the “Strike of 1993,” baseball has been financially hurting. What fan wants to go and watch a bunch of greedy, overpaid, crybaby million dollar athletes after they decided not to play as a demonstration of their demands for even more money? However, baseball was soon on the proverbial road to recovery as the...
In conclusion anyone can change the game of baseball coaches, players even fans. The game of baseball never stays the same. It will change along with the times, but its how we adjust as players which makes the good player good and the bad player bad. Baseballs changes have made the game more interesting and enjoyable to watch.
Baseball is America’s past time. No two fields are exactly identical. The only identical portion of a baseball field, depending on the league you are in, is the infield. Every Major League Baseball park has the exact same dimensions for the infield, which is a four sided square laid like a diamond with each side being equal to ninety feet. The game of baseball is played between two teams using wood or metal bats, depending on league rules, league regulated sized ball, and baseball gloves. The game is started with the home team taking the field first. The home team will pitch to the visiting team trying to get three outs. Out can be made by a batter swinging and missing on strike three or fielder catching the ball in the air, or off of a bounce and proceed to throw the runner out at the base. After three outs are made the teams swap places and do the same thing over again. When the next team gets three outs, that makes up an inning. Most games are played with nine innings; however there are some younger leagues that just play with six innings. This is the basic structure of a baseball game, but the game of baseball ball is made up of so much more detail.
In softball, it is common for the crowd to be loud and upbeat. The spectator’s goal is to motivate and cheer on the favorite team. Softball is known for their chants and pre-game warmups. The environment of baseball is the opposite. If you find yourself at a baseball game, you will notice it is more calm and relaxed. The pitcher’s goal is to stay calm, collected, and to handle adversity. Baseball players are known to have a superstition about the game. Never will a professional baseball player be caught stepping on foul lines, or messing with any kind of routine that has caused success in the past, where in softball they don’t see it as a big deal. The speed of the game between the two is very noticeable. In a standard softball game, the length of the innings is shorter than what people would expect in
The problem of steroid use in baseball came into the national spotlight during the 1990s. It was during this time that home run records were being broken at an incredible pace. It was also during this period when several famous baseball players began to speak out about steroid use in baseball. The most controversial expose about steroid use in baseball is perhaps that of Ken Caminiti in 2002. Caminiti admitted publicly that he was using steroids when he won the National League’s Most Valuable Player in 1996 and in the several seasons following that. That revelation of his drug use highlighted the issue of steroid use in baseball. From that point on, the professional baseball league was under constant scrutiny from the public as well as from the federal agencies. Many had criticized Major League Baseball as ineffective in its efforts to address the issue of steroids use in professional baseball. When the BALCO incident exploded in late 2003 and affected many big name players in baseball, the public and Congress demanded answers from the accused baseball players. It was then that steroid use in baseball sparked media frenzy and legisl...

Today, baseball is known as a game composed of two teams of nine players each who play in an enclosed field. Both teams rotate between the position of offense and defense, where one team is batting and one is on the field. When playing defense, there are positions in both the infield and outfield in order to prevent runs from the offense. In the offensive realm, the batter’s goal is to outsmart the pitcher and move the players around the bases to score a maximum amount of runs. The primary objective of the game is to score more runs than the opposing team by the end of the nine innings. However, the early forms of this sport were played much different.
