Ten-year-old Kenny Sakamoto is chasing his sixteen-year-old brother Mikey’s footstep on becoming a baseball player in the Asahi baseball league. His father is a world war 1 veteran and owns a camera store while his mom is a housewife. Life for the Sakamoto family was normal they had family friends over from time to time and shared stories, but it was December 7th that changed all Japanese family, an article came in the newspaper about the war saying Japan had bombed Pearl Harbor and declared war, world war II. World war II affected Kenny more and more as more people knew about it, Japanese schools are shut down and Kenny’s ways on becoming a baseball player are now forgotten. Sadako is a young girl with leukemia and when she was younger the Atom bomb hit her hometown in Japan and killed hundreds of relatives. It was hard for her and her family figuring out that had leukemia, but with a plan and hope Sadako’s emotion became happier and happier. The reason this book ( Sadako and the thousand paper cranes ) is related to Heart of a champion is because even he though the scenario is different, the message isn’t it’s the same, It’s about perseverance and how you should try again if something doesn’t go your way. When a letter came in for the Sakamoto family in the heart of a champion, it explained that all Japanese families are supposed to pack their bags to go somewhere far away. Even though it was unbelievable for the Sakamoto family, they couldn’t go against the government’s order. While in the camp, Kenny knew maybe him becoming a baseball player will never happen but he tried anyways. He had hope and a goal he wanted to accomplish and so did Sadako, even though they wish were different they all had challenges they had to
