Rap has surpassed Rock and many other genres today in music. In the the year 2017, eight of the 10 most listened to artist were rap artist. Artist like Lil Uzi Vert, Future, and Cardi B have topped charts and have songs listed as the top 10 best selling tracks. All rap albums have similar structures such as telling a real-life story, features from known artist and a hit song. In a good rap album an artist must tell a real-life story. Sada Baby along with other Detroit rappers share their experiences living in different parts of the city. Throughout D.O.N. by Sada Baby, he references a lot of gun, gang activity, and drug use. Once they get recognized for their talent they begin to write and produce with a lot of known artist. Working with known artist can get them further up in the industry and grow their fan base. Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday project featured the iconic Michigan rapper Eminem. When speaking to Eminem about this collaboration, Nicki recalls being very nervous to even ask for a favor so big. Eminem happily accepted and the hit track Roman’s Revenge was created and released before the entire Pink Friday album was. Travis Scott released his second studio album, Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight. Still being a fairly new artist, Travis was accompanied by other newer artist such as Quavo and Young Thug on the popular song Pick up the phone. With this collaboration all three fan bases had a familiar sound of the new age rap and got an idea of each rappers style. The compilation album Cruel Summer by Kanye West was a piece that included works from all members of the record label GOOD Music. This album included the hit song Mercy. This song had verses from Kanye West, Big Sean, Pusha T, and Def Jam rapper 2 Chainz. There is a misconception regarding rap music content about how it predominantly focuses on the topics of drugs, sex and money. Various people do not understand that rap music is a valuable method of expressing one’s emotions and thoughts. The lyrics in rap music are able to strongly represent a broader story of someone’s story. Coolio’s Gangsta’s Paradise is a story of what it was like as an African-American male to grow up in the ghettos. Through his lyrics, Coolio explains the real-life problems of living in Compton, his hometown. His music describes how immense the amount violence inner city violence that occurred and what he had to become in order to fit into that society. The point of this song was to show those who had not experienced what he had gone through some insight. Coolio mentions how his deviant actions have affected his relationship with his mother.
