Good Morning Year 7 students, today I will explain the importance of sacred stories and how they teach individuals to attain certain values and ethical beliefs.
Sacred stories are special narrative texts often used in faith traditions to teach followers a certain value, or ethical belief. Through an engaging plot line sacred stories provide a deeper moral understanding of right and wrong, as well as a stronger influence on how to live your life.
Buddhism for instance is a certain faith tradition that uses sacred stories to explain and provide deeper understanding of ethics and values. It centres around five blind men who quarrelled over the appearance of an elephant, each had felt a different part and described it differently. A wise man who witnessed this quarrel, said the men were both right and wrong in their descriptions, wrong as they had felt one part of the elephant and assumed it was the whole animal. The man stated only once they had combined their depictions could they truthfully describe the full elephant (The British Library Board , n.d.). In accordance to the main values in Buddhism this sacred story develops the main message that only once the men had utilised the value of their awareness to each depiction, and collaborated their ideas could they truthfully understand the elephant and attain the value of wisdom. Ethically this story conveys the view that society has multiple perspectives that are not right nor wrong, and are each important and must be made aware of. The story further supports the Buddhist belief that change can always occur, when the blind men employed the value of awareness, in doing so they were able to change their situation so that they could understand the appearance of the full elephant. The story also conveys the point that in order to reach a higher level of understanding and attain the value of wisdom people’s ideas and thoughts must be collaborated and joined
