Citalopram Generic Name: Citalopram Brand name: Celexa, Cipramil INTRODUCTION Citalopram is one of the Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) which are prescribed mainly for depressive episode. INDICATIONS • Depression –FDA approved. • Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) • Panic disorder • Generalized anxiety disorder • Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) • Social anxiety disorder (social phobia) DOSAGE AND ADMININSTRATION Dosage Forms Tablets 10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg Liquid 250 mg/5 mL (240 ml bottle) How to dose Depression: It is used at the dose of 20 mg per day, usually given at bedtime. The dosage may be increased to 40 mg per day after one week. The maximum dose is up to 60 mg/day which should be reserved for treatment of refractory patients who have had a 4 to 6 week trial at 40 mg/day. Elderly: The dosage is 10 mg per day for one week then increase to 20mg/day. The treatment of refractory patients is 40mg/day after a trial of 4-6 weeks on 20 mg/day.
