Introduction In 2001, al Qaeda launched the September 11 attacks. Important political and economic area of U.S were attacked which includes New York City and D.C metropolitan area of Washington. Leader of al Qaeda, Osama bin Laden admitted the responsibility of the attacks. Laden blames on U.S for strong intervention on the Islamic world. After that U.S launched War on Terror as a counter attack against al Qaeda. 13 years after, al Qaeda is no longer a substantial threat to the West. In the following paragraphs, threat of al Qaeda to the West, reason that al Qaeda is no longer a substantial threat to the West and conclusion will be covered. Rationale behind terrorist of al Qaeda It shows the framework of religious fundamentalism. It refers to a reaction against modernity. Rejection of modernity is a way to defend religion against modernity. Threats to religion are modernity and secularism. There are 10 features of fundamentalism: Anti-modernity It refers to reaction against rationalism, secularism and modernity. However, fundamentalists can gain due to science and technology. For example, information technology allows fundamentalists organized large scale movement. Also, religious principles subordinate science and technology. Boundaries There is a clear distinction between members and non-members. That means, fundamentalists purse a close group. Outsider is not considered. Members will be characterized by dress, behavior and speech. Black-and-white view of the world There is no third way in the mind of fundamentalists. That means, they are radical as their minds limits their chance. That means, little possibility for them to make compromise. The camp of al Qaeda is damaged (Xinhua, 2012). Moreover, Western agencies sent a lot of agents to penetrate into al Qaeda. Large amount of secret information are controlled by the Western anti-terrorist office. Terrorist attack can be stopped before happen. In 2012, al Qaeda of Saudi Arabia sent a warrior for suicide bombing in an airline towards U.S. However, the plan was failed. The warrior sent from al Qaeda is the spy of U.S. He passed the bomb to CIA. This operation is coordinated by CIA and intelligence agencies of Saudi Arabia (Cri, 2012). Besides, the Western takes military action to combat al Qaeda. U.S had taken military action more than 15 times in the Southern part of Yemen which is the sum of the past 10 years. U.S also sends fighters for bombing. A senior leader of al Qaeda was killed (Cri, 2012).
