There are four billion cellphones across the world and approximately 1.08 billion of them are smartphones. 49 percent of these owners are using their device for social networking and one third of Facebook users are connecting with Facebook Mobile. Also there are over 200 million YouTube videos watched per day on mobile devices and 60 percent of Twitter accounts are using Twitter Mobile. While picture driven social media may have fewer users, these sites boast very large amounts of mobile users. Instagram which has a smaller user base than Twitter is expected to surpass them in mobile users this year. With such a large number of users on mobile devices it is important to optimize content for them. If a website performs poorly with mobile browsers or an app cannot display content properly users are far less likely to use it. There are many options to optimize websites for mobile users but the two most popular options are to either optimize the entire desktop website for a mobile friendly experience, or to host a separate website for mobile users and have your website recognize which device users are on and send them to the appropriate version.
