Gathering Blue and Maslow’s hierarchy Being the best version of yourself can make you feel powerful, strong, and creative. Maslow's Hierarchy is a system of growth that can make you grow into a better person. Since the hierarchy is ordered from basic needs to the highest level of luxury, many people don’t even realize they are going through these changes. In the novel Gathering Blue, Kira, a girl who wants to save her village from the men who govern them, Christopher, Kira’s father who has conquered being blinded, and Jamison an envious but undeservedly respected man, all use this hierarchy. He was cemented at the level of safety,security of body, employment, resources and more. Once it was his time to be a guardian, the villages form of government, jamison a knowledgeable citizen attacked him, leaving him in the field to die. “Jamison is the one who tried to kill me,” It turns out that Jamison was taking advantage of every privilege he was accustomed to in the edifice. Within a matter of days, Christopher regained his strength. Even with the disability of being blind, he was able to push through until self actualization. “...my hands are very clever because they have learned to do things unseeing,” Not many people are able to subdue such a painstaking and self eroding milestone, being that Jamison had disfigured him so badly. While Kira and Christopher grew into exceptional people, Jamison was stuck at safety. The other two characters seemed to be improving significantly, as Jamison only had security in his life.
