On July 17, 1950, Little Company of Mary hospital was the location of the first organ transplant in medical history. At age 49, Ruth Tucker “suffered from polycystic kidneys” and was in need of a new one. Her family also suffered from this disease, losing her mother and sister to it as well. It was five weeks before Tucker and the hospital would receive a healthy kidney as a donor. During the operation, about 40 doctors were there looking on the operation. The entire procedure took about 45 to 60 minutes to complete, starting at 11:30 am. Several papers and magazines, including Newsweek and TIME, reported on the procedure, calling it courageous and brave.
