Not only am I confident that Rutgers University will fully assist me in reaching my personal enrichment, but I have faith that it will help me to achieve my career goals as well. Working at Steel Pier has still got me going back for a new season every year; because I love the fact that I get a chance to bond with so many people who travel to the United States from the other side of the globe just to work. Rutgers is the same, but rather than working, students travel from all over the world to study and attend school. Every summer, I meet new imports and willingly become such good friends with them that when it’s time to say our goodbyes and farewells, it makes me tear up a little. The main component I look for in college is their commitment to further my studies. Transferring would allow myself to be put in an atmosphere of continuous motivation and growth that I would feed off of my superiors and the people around me.
The 4+4 program at Hofstra caught my interest after I researched its medical school, the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. Northwell comprises some of the most renowned hospitals in the New York area, from the Long Island Jewish Medical Center to Lenox Hill Hospital. Aside from being partnered with such a prestigious institution, the Zucker School of Medicine’s progressive, “case based” curriculum is what intrigued me the most. Few medical schools offer to train its students for the 21st century, and this hands on approach seems like the best method to expose students from our generation to the ever changing field of healthcare. From working in groups to solve weekly cases to using real world patient cases to explain concepts, I feel as if the Zucker School of Medicine offers an optimal experience for its students to succeed in their fields.

Soaked under sweat, I stood on the running machine, took a deep breath, and counted in my mind, one…two… three, GO! With renewed power and confidence, I started to run again with satisfaction. This moment happened every day in last summer at a gym and I lost 62pounds. Had persisted for five months, I am so proud of myself that I am able to achieve the goal of losing weight and established high self-discipline. In addition, I have gained great appreciation for the challenges. However, I also have grown up from this, on the other hand, frustrated experience. Not because the process of losing weight was painful, but because my by-product of the weight loss journey, my online team.

So after graduation I decided to explore my options at the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh. Wow, was this a mistake? I grew up in a household where education was seen as a form of self-improvement and empowerment. Being raised in rural Central California by two Filipino immigrants who had nothing more than a high school education, my family did not have an educated or intellectual history I could look up to. That is, until my mother decided to get a college education at the age of 45. I must have been in middle school at the time, before which the word “college” was never really spoken or talked about and I could honestly say I only had a vague idea of what it even was. Rather than having the traditional sit down talk with my parents about higher education, my mom clearly spoke to me through example. I distinctly remember times where I would be her study buddy, and while doing so, I found myself leisurely enjoying the pages of her science textbooks. Instead of asking her questions related to her upcoming text, I inquisitively asked juvenile questions like, “How do the genes make us?” Today I know that this is a very big and complex question that we are still trying to answer. Yet at that moment, I wanted an answer, but mother did not have the solution, nor did the textbook. That was the birth of my pursuit of scientific career.
As a young woman growing up in an urbanized setting and attending public schools all of my life, when the time came to start planning and searching for colleges, I searched for schools that I felt fit my persona, that I would be comfortable attending for some of the most integral years of my life. My search included schools such as Temple University, and Pennsylvania State University, higher education institutions that allowed me to challenge myself, but at the same time would put me in a setting where I would be with others just like myself, fitting into the standard American university fashion.
