Mother Love-Nurturing or Torturing?
In Pavlova's novel titled “A Double Life” a story is told about the relationship between mother and daughter. Throughout the novel we see examples of strict discipline and harsh living conditions for the daughter. One example that we see how serious the mother s about how to raise a daughter is by making some decision for the daughter. We constantly that the mothers in this novel will choose when they go to sleep,with whom they play with. It even goes to the distance of marriage. Cecily's mother at one point admits to how proud she is of herself for creating such a perfect well behaved daughter. It looks as if the mothers are treating their own daughters like pawns in a chess game against one another to see who has the most perfect daughter. Another belief that the mothers believe in is that a mothers obligation is to be able to read into the souls of the daughters,in order to prevent any damage to be done and to keep them safe at all times. In doing this,one denies the daughters right to choose or grow and it even creates a gap between their relationship of mother and daughter. It basically not healthy for either one. As we see the results of what bad can happens when a mother takes full control of a daughters life,we see the foreshadowing of a bad marriage. In the case of Cecile and Demitry, at one point Demitry takes a bet from his friends that he will remain the same bachelor before the life of marriage approaches. This can only mean one thing, he's going to treat Cecile and the marriage like a joke. Also Cecile herself doesn't feel right about the marriage,but backing down would embarrassed her mother and Cecile's been raised not to even talk back,god forbid going against what her mother picked out as a future husband. Misery is what the future holds for Cecile and her dreams are long gone. Every decision has been chosen not by her,but by her mother.
“Medea” is a short story that shows how sore a marriage can go when attention is not payed to a mother. In this story we see the story of cab driver unfold about the recent death of his 14yr.old daughter. He begins to tell the man in the back seat how much he loved his daughter.
Michalopoulou is selectively descriptive when it comes to the main character of the unnamed father. With Michalopoulou's description of the father the reader is led to believe that he does not care about his children: "He'd gotten used to their backs, but it had been a long time since he'd seen their faces" (Michalopoulou, 77). Throughout the story one can see that the father is not completely like what he is first perceived to be. The father sneaks around and begins to cheat on his wife. The reader is informed that the wife is wheelchair bound and unable to move due to paralysis. When the father is "caught" cheating he leaves home and begins a life with his paramour, a young real estate agent. Feeling bad about leaving his two children he attempts to reconnect with them.
Despite her convent background, Emma is a lavish spendthrift who is more concerned on worldly things and is characterized by selfishness as seen when she says, “But I don’t want anything but my own” (Flaubert 110). She also engages in multiple affairs which are fueled by her romantic ideals and illusions. Contrary to Emma, Edna struggles to live an independent life exhibited with self-control as seen when she denies Roberts marriage wish by saying “I give myself where I chose” (Chopin 19). In addition, Emma engages in prostitution to be able to satisfy her luxurious lifestyle whereas Edna’s affair is based on latent fantasies which had been suppressed by her
Throughout the whole story, you are torn with emotions between the characters. At first, you feel sorry for Medea. Her husband, who she has saved from death, has left her for another woman. She has been "all/obediant" their entire marriage, transforming herself into the sort of wife required by society. You can't help but sympathize with her.
In class there have been many discussions over the relationships and marriages among the books we have read. When someone thinks of marriage, a fairy tale with a happy ending might come to mind, or possibly a safe haven for those looking for something stable. In The Awakening by Kate Chopin, and “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, marriage takes a turn for the worse. Marriage is no longer the happy memories in a lifetime. It can be the thing that hinders the women in these stories from developing their full potential or experiencing the world and other lifestyles. Through these texts and this time frame, we will analyze the meaning of their marriages, how they function, and the end result of both.
These behaviors serve as the opposite of women/mothers such as Madame Adele Ratignolle. The typical woman of this time, would be more like Adele, caring towards her family and taking on the role of a “good housewife”. She would have followed the “conventions” of the time whereas Edna did not. Many women felt like their sole purpose was to care for their children and husband. The typical women “were women who idolized their children, worshipped their husbands, and esteemed it a holy privilege to efface themselves as individuals and grow wings as ministering angels” (Chopin). Edna was unlike these women because she did not idolize or worship anyone. She was willing to do many things for her children but she plainly stated that she would never give up who she was for her children. She would die for her children but never give up her identity, personality, and beliefs. Edna was also never described as a beautiful woman, “she was rather handsome than beautiful” (Chopin). Edna thrives to be more like Mademoiselle Reisz who is not concerned with beauty and standards, but dedicated herself to music and art. I can't make it more clear; it's only something which I am beginning to comprehend, which is revealing itself to me….but a woman who would give her life for her children could do no more than that” (Chopin.64). Both Edna and Adele have contrasting ideas about motherhood. Since Adele’s personality causes no cognitive dissonance she has no idea what Edna means when she says she would not give up herself. But while Adele pitys Edna , Edna is also pitying Adele. Because even though Adele is happy and free of anguish Edna is experiencing she lives in this colorless existence unknowingly following a path society said she must. This is why it’s so hard for Adele to understand Edna: A woman who does not fit that role, does not possess the same domestic harmony, and also is very detached from her family. The anguish and cognitive dissonance that surrounds Edna is due to the fact knows what others want her to be and their inability to understand others may be different. Despite the detachment and isolation Edna will not chop the pieces of herself off that do not fit into the mold and she will not give up

Not surprisingly, many achievements have come from women challenging and stepping out of their expected social roles. Today most women are free to voice their opinion and express themselves in every aspect of their lives, including their marriage. It was not long ago when women were deprived of this freedoms. The tragic play Medea is a struggle between reason and violence. Medea is deliberately portrayed as not a ‘normal woman’, but excessive in her passions. Medea is a torment to herself and to others; that is why Euripides shows her blazing her way through life leaving wreckage behind her. Kate Chopin's "The Story of an Hour" demonstrates the highly typical gender roles that could be found in a late 1800's scene as it shows even if the marriage is kind, it could be inherently oppressive. Not attempting to hide, Mrs. Mallard knows that she will weep at her husbands funeral, however she can’t help this sudden feeling of seeing, “beyond [the] bitter moment [of] procession of years to come that would belong to her absolutely” (Chopin, 16). In an unloving marriage of this time, women were trapped in their roles until they were freed by the death of their husbands. Although Mrs. Mallard claims that her husband was kind and loving, she can’t help the sudden spark of joy of her new freedom. This is her view on the release of her oppression from her roles of being a dutiful wife to her husband. Altogether, Mrs. Mallard claims that, “there would be no powerful will bending hers in that blind persistence with which men and women believe they have a right to impose a private will upon a fellow-creature” (Chopin, 16). This is the most important of Mrs. Mallard’s thoughts, as she never officially states a specific way when her husband oppressed her. However, the audience can clearly suggest that this is a hint towards marriage in general that it suffocates both men and women. Marriage is an equal partnership in which compromise and communication become the dominant ideals to make the marriage better. Her disregard of gender relations is also evident in the way she ignores motherhood and commits inhumane crimes against her own children in spite and for simple revenge.
Society has changed a lot in the last couple of decades, though, at the time set in the play Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, the stereotype was very much alive. Even today echoes of this archaic family model still exist. Being normal, and adapting to society, can often lead a person to feel a sense of belonging in the short term. However, the penalty for conforming is that the individual can be lost. Giving up your personal goals, in the pursuit of those passed down from your family can lead to a lifetime of regrets. Basing decisions on societal norms can also have devastating consequences, leading the individual to become lost in a mundane life that is not of their choosing. Martha and George created a fictional son for their private needs to take away from the failure they felt as married individuals by not being able to conceive a child. Nick and Honey started their marriage to fill their roles as future parents in the expected family dynamic. Confronting each couple is a personal failure resulting in an unrealized future. Neither couple has a desire to admit their shortcomings for fear of judgment from the other couple.
