In the past 500 years, Russia has become one of the more influential actors on the world stage of politics. The Russian people have however endured many hardships and atrocities from both external and internal sources over their time as an identifiable nation (i.e., since 862 CE). Culture as defined by Webster: the way people live at a particular time and place. There are many different variables that devise a nation’s culture; here are six examples from FM 3-24.2: Education, Military, Arts and Science, Geography, Religion and Language. Ironically, she was actually a German who married into the Romanov family. Catherine the Great continued to restructure and modernize the government and she had the code of laws rewritten and updated. Catherine the Great’s addition to Russian culture was not limited to the governmental sphere. She was also a patron of the arts and sciences and did her best to fund and expand them. As an example of her dedication to the arts and sciences, she started the Russian Academy Of Sciences. Her time as Empress was not without war with Russia’s neighboring countries. She sent troops to help the Polish King suppress an uprising and she went to war with the Ottoman Empire and Persia. It was through her war with the Ottoman Empire that Russia gained more lands on the Black Sea, including the Crimean Peninsula. The legislative branch consists of two parts or houses making it bicameral. These houses are known as the State Duma, which is the lower house, and the Council of Federation, which is the upper house. The citizens of Russia elect members of the State Duma for a five-year term of service in the same manner that Americans elect their representatives, by a secret ballot vote. Members of the Council of Federation are appointed by the federal districts that they represent. There are a total of 83 federal districts, the federal city districts of Moscow and Saint Petersburg and numerous small regions; each gets to appoint two representatives for 166 members total. The head of the district that they represent determines’ the representative’s term or length of service. The Executive branch consists of the President, his cabinet and the Premier, otherwise known as the prime minister in other countries. Those running for and winning the presidential seat are elected to a six-year term and can only serve two consecutive terms. The position of premier serves a term of six years after being appointed by the president and approved by the State Duma.
