Out of all of the countries in the world, Russia is by far the largest at about 17,075,200 square kilometres. With a big country comes big environmental responsibility, but Russia doesn’t seem to be doing too well of a job. The environmental conditions of Russia may not be as great as you think, having statistics that are quite shocking. Because of the abundance of sources such as oil, natural gas, and coal, Russia is one of the leading producers of greenhouse gas emissions. What many people are unaware of is that between 2000 and 2012, Russia lost more of its forests than any other country on earth. That is single handedly accounting for 13.6 percent of net loss in forest area. Russia has a massive forest cover, the largest in the world, amounting to one fifth of the global forest area. It is estimated that about 20,000 km are deforested every year in Russia, which is bad news considering the forests in Russia have a shorter growing season because of the extremely cold weather that occurs there. This results in the forests taking longer to recover, and if they can’t recover at the same speed they’re being deforested, that’s when it becomes an environmental concern. While many industries may comply with the laws and regulations, many ignore the necessity for sustainable production. Russia 's regulations regarding the timber industry are much more loose compared to countries such as Canada, the United States, and different parts of Europe. Deforestation is permanent destruction, the land they are destroying will never be the same and at the rate Russia and even the rest of the world are going, it will have no time to recover, at least not in our lifetime. Trees help with storing carbon, 300 billion tons of carbon are stored in them which is 40 times greater than the annual greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels. The Dnieper River and the Ural Mountains had a major impact on the development of Russia, as they impacted Russian both positively and negatively. For example, a positive effect of the Dnieper River is that it aided in trade with different civilizations, and the Ural Mountains protected Russia from being invaded by outside forces. Historically, Russia’s relationship with the West has been shaky at best. From the Crimean War in the 1850’s to alienation following the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution all the way up to the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia has been “under attack.” This has forced them to adopt a mentality that is based in self sufficiency and autarky. As Western nations attempt to strengthen democracy in Russia in the 21st century, Russia has responded negatively to these perceived “intrusions.” Therefore it is important to ask what role the West should play in Russia’s development and what is hindering this from happening? In her book Russia: Lost in Transition, Lilia Shevtsova outlines two different ways the West can approach development with Russia: let them figure it out themselves or patiently create an international environment that the Russians feel comfortable in. Shevtsova clearly favors the latter. The West’s involvement is hindered however by double standards, ideological differences, and negative perceptions of the West’s motives by the Russian people. These must first be analyzed before showing how a cautious, assertive approach is the best way for the West to assist in Russian development.

Russia contains many different trade routes and is looking to expand its trans-Siberian railway to open up even more. There are also many different boundaries, a large amount of these are in the Northwestern, Central, Southern, Volga, and lower portions of the Urals, and Siberian areas. Populated areas contain most of the sustainable structures. It also includes 26 protected sites of World Heritage. These are found in the northwest mainly, but also found throughout Russia. Capabilities in Russia are lower than most other countries as the climate and terrain pose the issue of making most of the country not ideal for saving, enhancing, or sustaining life.
What is also becoming increasingly clear is the effect that forests have on the climate and the climate has on forests, and how changes in one system will affect the other. Losing forest makes it worse. Clearing forests also releases large amounts of carbon dioxide. Worldwide deforestation means we don’t have as many trees to absorb the extra CO2. This means more of it stays in the atmosphere, trapping more heat. Forest are cut down for many reasons, but most of them are related to money or to people’s need to provide for their families. Their crime rate is so high that if you were to go to the store like the grocery store, when you walk in the store u have to lock your things up in a locker and shop. When you got through shopping then you were to pick up your stuff out of your locker. The whole time that you are shopping there are people watching your every move. The reason why the crime rate is so high is because they work hard to get paid a little amount of money. Russia’s unemployment rate is very high. There are not enough jobs in Russia for everyone to have a job. For example if you were to get a job at a fast food restaurant, you were only getting paid a little or nothing an hour and that’s not even close to minuan wage in America.

One of the most evident problems associated to the environment is the issue of the logging of trees, mainly in undisturbed places such as the Amazon basin. Trees are considered the lungs of the Earth. They recycle all the polluting carbon in the air and return oxygen back into our atmosphere, creating a stable cycle of carbon in our atmosphere. However, the impeccable rates which trees are being cut down in our forests have grown to ever increasing and alarming rates. Trees that are made way for farming are burnt up releasing deadly amounts of carbon and thus leading to the problem of global warming. As its names suggest the world is slowly warming up and without any notice the environment which God has gave us will be slowly eradicated. The daily lives which humans carry on about every day are also a factor influencing on our environment and global warming. By driving cars that have a thirst for petrol we are releasing carbon dioxide and furthermore impacting on the world?s climate. In Australia environmental impact has always been evident. Land clearing especially in places such as Queensland has caused land to lay dry and lifeless where all forms of life is destroyed. By clearing land we are not only affecting our climate but are also destroying animal habitat and the usage of the land.
