Roy's Adaptation Theory
Introduction
A person’s health is an ongoing process. A change in health and illness can be challenging for a person. As a nurse, our goal is to help the person to adapt with the changes and the challenges they may have. By using Roy Adaptation Model, nurses can help understand the demands that are causing the problems, how well the person is adapting to the problems and help the person develop effective coping skills.
Roy’s Adaptation Theory
Sister Callista Roy developed the Adaptation Model of Nursing. Roy’s Adaptation Model is one of the most useful conceptual frameworks that focuses on individual adaptation to a changeable environment. Roy sees the individual as a set of interrelated systems, which are biological, psychological and social. The individual strives to maintain a balance between these systems and the outside world to where he or she can cope adequately.
According to the model, adaptation is defined as the process and outcome in which thinking and feeling persons use conscious awareness to create integration between human perception and their environment. The major concepts of Roy’s Adaptation Model are person, health, environment and nursing. Roy’s model sees the person as an open, adaptive system which uses coping skills to deal with stressors and is in constant interaction with a changing environment. Environment is the stimuli, which is divided into focal, contextual and residual stimuli. Roy defines environment as all conditions, circumstances and influences that surround and affect the development and behavior of the person. By using Roy’s theory, nurses can help the patient adapt to changes and design an intervention that best suits the person.
