“Romeo and Juliet” has numerous meanings. All throughout the play, the author, William Shakespeare, is constantly trying to make us, the reader, realize something. One of the key themes in Romeo and Juliet is ‘hatred leads to violence and tragedy’. All throughout the play, the hatred members of the Montague family and members of the Capulet family demonstrate towards each other continually leads to hostility. All of these incidents show us this particular theme of the play.

In the very first scene in Act One, a fight breaks out in the town square between several of the workers from the Capulet family and the Montague family. Later in this skirmish, Tybalt and Benvolio join, all determined to win. After the outbreak begins to involve the townspeople and whoever else will join, the prince arrives and puts a stop to it. Although the Prince proclaims “If ever [Montagues and Capulets] disturb our streets again, [their] lives shall pay the forfeit of the peace” (Act One Scene 1 Line 96-97), vengeance will always be in the back of their minds.
