omeo and Juliet, the classic play by William Shakespeare, displays two children of opposing households falling in love yet ends with disaster. As one of the most popular plays in history, it has been translated to the movie screen multiple times. One of these movies is directed by Baz Luhrmann where he transformed the play to a modernized standpoint for Romeo and Juliet. In his 1996 production, Luhrmann added his own components of Romeo and Juliet to accentuate the story line. One of his additions is water, which is placed in almost every scene. In the movie, water symbolizes the emotion of the characters through its course. The water embodies the emotions that are not always noticed by one’s eye.
In Luhrmann’s movie, Romeo and Juliet meet with a fish tank in between them at the Capulet’s household. There, they instantly fall for each other but they have no clue of this just yet. The water in the tank has no physical contact with Romeo or Juliet and the tank acts as transparent barrier in which keeps the two apart. The tank is a representation of their love for each other. It is not until they are in contact with water that their love will be in reach.

This is where Tybalt challenges Romeo yet Mercutio takes his place due to a misunderstanding. This leads to Romeo trying to break up the two; Mercutio is wounded under Romeo’s arm and curses the two households. Soon after Mercutio’s commotion, a dark storm begins to brew, yet there seems to be no rain.
