Do you have any idea what the word duality means? Duality is “an instance of opposition or contrast between two concepts or two aspects of something; a dualism.” The theme of duality is a major theme in many books and these two books have a lot of dualistic features in them. Many books you have read may have had duality in them and you may not have even known it. In this paper I am going to compare and contrast the duality of Romeo and Juliet against Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. In order to do that I will provide a summary and explain the plot of each book, and then look at the dualities within each book. Once I have covered this information not only will you know what duality means but you will also understand how to look for it in your readings. The first plot I will take a look at is Romeo and Juliet. In Romeo and Juliet the plot of the story is how two star crossed lovers meet; however, their families, the Montagues and the Capulets, abhor each other. Romeo and Juliet ironically are the only children of each of the families and yet they fall madly in love with one another and get married. Romeo says “My only love sprung from my only hate”. The families have been feuding for such a long time that the feud has carried over many generations. “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose, by any other name would smell as sweet.” Within a couple days, not even a week, of getting married Romeo and Juliet both tragically committed suicide. Romeo believed Juliet was dead when she was actually in a comatose sleep, and killed himself. When Juliet awoke from a comatose sleep and found Romeo dead she then killed herself. Tragically this is the only way the family feud ended. Next I will look at the plot of Dr. Jekyl... ... middle of paper ... ...e plots of each book; Two only-children of families that detested one another falling in love to the point of ending in tragic death and one man searching for two separate types of life to the point of losing himself in death. We covered many examples of duality in both books. If you noticed these books plots are similar, not in book type but in the pure fact that these books both show some of the same features of writing like duality, obsession, figurative language, and many more themes and features. These books don't have the same genre or anything like that but they are the same in the way that they use literary devices and other things. These books both explore many concepts that are alike but none as much as duality. They show the duality of human nature and many more. The next time you read a book maybe you’ll notice some dualistic features in it as well.
