In the tragic and striking play Romeo and Juliet, star-crossed lovers fall zealously in love through courses of conflicts and feud. Preceding Act 2 scene 2, the two adolescents of opposing families meet at a celebration; Romeo falls fanatically in love at first sight with Juliet. Romeo and Juliet are both devastated as they find out their identities after the part. Fortunately, Romeo is not disturbed by this discovery as he later sneaks into Juliet’s garden. In this excerpt, Shakespeare reveals Romeo to the audience as an obsessive lover with his great use of imagery, and effective figures of speech. He shows his affection admiring Juliet’s beauty by creating a passionate mood for the audience and revealing signs of themes (II.ii.2-25). In this extract, Romeo performs a soliloquy where he reflects on Juliet’s beauty and expresses his feelings (II.ii.2-25). Shakespeare uses this point of view as it allows his characters to reveal their deepest inner thoughts and feelings. Through the passage, Romeo portrays his feelings by praising Juliet’s beauty (II.ii.2-25). “It is the East, and Juliet is the sun!” is one of the phrases that exhibit Romeo’s personality, which is being a neurotic lover. Romeo compares Juliet to the sun, bright and heavenly, as he sees her in her balcony. He worships her as if a goddess and compares her to stellar and mighty objects (II.ii.30-31). Romeo also obsessively claims that he wishes to be a glove, to have the privilege of touching Juliet’s cheek as she leans on her palm (II.ii.23-25).
