The romantic red effect is the hypothesis that men tend to increase a women’s attractiveness and sexually desirability if the color red is present. The color-in-context theory is a belief that the context in which colors are viewed influences how it is perceived psychologically. . The color red might have different effects in various situations. For example, the color red is believed to be an aphrodisiac and bears the meaning of sex and romance in the context of heterosexual interactions. On the other hand, the color red can also have a negative connotation. When a man sees red marks on a test he has taken, he automatically thinks those marks are associated with a poor performance on the exam, symbolizing failure and inaccuracy. Researchers randomly assigned each participant an image of the women with either a red or green background used in the study. Conceptually, the experiment was testing whether the background color of a picture of a woman (IV) affected how perceived attractiveness, sexual attraction, kindness, and intelligence were perceived (DV). The independent variable was operationalized through the different colors used in the background (red or green). Whereas, the dependent variable was operationalized through the use of a scale, the scale ranged from 1 (not at all) to 9 (very/extremely).
