Boys are always interested in sport at a young age, sports like football, hockey, and soccer. I found these sports to be boring and not fun for me to play. One day when I was in the midst of browsing the internet I came across a video of a boy not too much older than I was at the time, by the name of Ryan Sheckler. This boy had an online video showing off his abilities on a skateboard. To a certain extent I was intrigued and impressed. My attention was set towards my goal of learning how to skateboard. I then left my house to get myself a skateboard at the store. When I arrived at the store there were plenty of options to choose from, like different sizes (length and width), wheels, bearings, trucks, and even grip tape. In the end, I decided on getting a blind deck with independent trucks, spitfire wheels and bearings and Jessup grip tape. After getting the deck put together, I left the store and started my adventure forward into the underground world of skateboarding.

Success is not given, it is earned. Waking up for a 5am skating practice is nobody’s ideal Wednesday morning, especially for a hormonal teenager like myself. However, satisfaction of landing a new jump or learning a new spin does not come from letting our ‘wants’ buyout our dreams. “By the time we’d finished, we were amazed at how much the book had taught us: about ourselves.” I don’t always succeed, nor do I always expect to. Throughout all the morning practices and late night workouts, failure is something I have learned from. I remember giving up on myself countless times after falling on a jump or not turning my edges properly, as if I had ‘writer's-block,’ feeling completely numb. Nevertheless, succeeding was the easy part, it was learning to grow into the 6 year old singing, confident, child again, and defeating the numbness. Nella Larsen's Passing tells the story of the reconnection of two childhood friends whose lives take divergent paths. Through these characters Larsen weaves together a cautionary tale about the consequences of living a double life, and the harm associated with internalized racism. Through Clair and Irene, Larsen conveys to readers the consequences of desiring to live life as a bicultural individual during the early 20th century. Claire represents the archetypical character known as the tragic mulatto, as she brings tragedy to all those she encounters. Irene represents someone grappling with internalized racism; catalyzed by Claire's reentrance into her life. Larsen juxtaposes the two characters to demonstrate the inescapability of social regulations. Clare attempts to escape the social barriers placed upon African-Americans, and she does, but not without consequence. Through diction, tone, and imagery Larsen makes it luminous to readers that "passing" may seem glamorous, however, the sacrifice one makes to do so is not without consequences for themselves and those they care about.
The last thing I wanted to learn about was jumping. This skill would be hardest but it would be crucial if I wanted to be an adventurous rider. It was very hard at first, by which I mean I would get air but crash. When I got the hang of it it was awesome it felt so great to be flying, or at least that’s what it felt like. By the end of my tenth year on this planet I was totally ready for a bigger four wheeler. Actually a four wheeler that would be twice as big as my current one at the time. That hurt pretty bad and I didn’t really want to ride anymore that day but I realized that stuff happens and if I’m still alive I’m going to keep on trucking. So, I learned all of the previous skills that I had on my old bike except this time I was much faster and way better. I was able to drag race and beat fifty percent or more of people but most of the time I’d win more. The first skateboards were made in the 1950’s being used as an exciting activity to take part in when the waves were down. From then and now the sport has changed tremendously, thanks to a group of young skaters from a slum area of Venice Beach or Dog-town, as the locals called it, known as the z-boys in the 1970’s. Lacrosse, the sport I have been playing since 4th grade, is my most beloved activity and I play almost every single day. I remember the first day my dad took me to my first camp.
