Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward”. The novel Roll Of Thunder Hear My Cry, is about a black family in southern Mississippi in the 1930’s who own their own land, which most black families do not have. It is also about how 9 year old Cassie Logan who learns ‘the way things are’. The Logan family struggles to keep their land as well. Courage is the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear; bravery.

In the novel, Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry there are several characters who have demonstrated an enormous amount of courage. Mama showed a tremendous amount of courage in the novel. One way this is true is because Mama went from door to door trying to get people to switch from shopping at the Wallace Store and to start shopping in Vicksburg. Another thing Mama did was that she pasted paper on the inside cover of the books that the black school had gotten. This is courageous because Mama lived in a time when blacks were considered less than whites. Another reason why what she did is courageous is because she was peacefully protesting about how blacks are being treated. She protested by asking people to stop shopping at the Wallace store.

Tatum showed a lot of courage and was punished by getting tarred and feathered because when he had gone down to Strawberry to tell Mr. Jim Lee Barnett that he did not order all the things that Mr. Barnett had charged him for. Because of this Mr. Tatum called Mr. Barnett a liar. After Mr. Barnett was liar, some night men came down to Mr. Tatum’s home and poured tar on him then stuck feathers to him. This was courageous because he called a white man a liar and this was during a time of when white people were considered more than black people. Mr. Tatum was also brave because he stood up for himself and says that Mr. Barnett is a
