Our cardiovascular system is composed of the heart and blood vessels. The main purpose of this system is to transport substances throughout the body. Even though transportation is the main function of the cardiovascular system, it is not the only function. Along with transportation we have protection and regulation.
Transportation has many roles in the cardiovascular system. First, our blood carries oxygen from our lungs to all of our tissues. While taking oxygen to our tissues, it also picks up carbon dioxide from them and takes it to our lungs to be removed from our body. Second, it delivers nutrients from our digestive tract to all of our body’s tissues. Third, it takes waste to our kidney’s to be removed from our body. Fourth, it takes hormones to their target cell from the endocrine cells. Last, it transports stem cells from our bone marrow to tissues where they mature and lodge.
Protection is the second function of the cardiovascular system. First, in order to limit the spread of infection our blood helps with inflammation in the body. Second, our white blood cells get rid of any microorganisms or cancer cells in our system. Third, to neutralize toxins in our body our blood proteins and antibodies help eliminate pathogens. Fourth, to initiate blood clotting we need platelets. This helps minimize blood loss in the long run.
Regulation is the third function of the cardiovascular system. First, by absorbing or giving off fluid our blood capillaries help stabilize the fluid distribution in our body. Second, blood proteins stabilize our extracellular fluid, electrolytes, and pH by buffering bases and acids. Third, movement in our blood flow helps regulate blood pressure and body temperature. There are many different ways of evaluating the amount of oxygen used during cardiovascular fitness and one the methods involved is called VO2 Max. VO2 Max is the maximum amount of oxygen that the body can hold.
The heart is an extraordinary structure that is the base of all human life. However, it similar to the uncomplicated functions of water pumps. As the heart beats, blood is distributed throughout the body using a network of blood vessels. The functions of the heart can be kept in regular and healthy conditions through exercise. Exercise has an effect on the blood that is circulating through the body. That circulating blood makes the heart desire more oxygen, causing the heart rate to increase rapidly to keep up with activity demand.
According to Virtual Medical Centre (2014) the primary function of the blood is to act as a transport, to give the body protection and to help regulate. The blood dissolves gases such as oxygen and carbon dioxide. The blood also transports vital nutrients throughout the body, such as micro-nutrients, fatty acids and amino acids. The flow of the blood helps to regulate the body’s temperature. Also the blood removes wastes material of metabolism. Blood cells (white and red cells) are carried through the body to help with the body’s natural defense, blood clotting and the carry anti-bodies.
The cardiovascular system - The cardiovascular system is responsible for transporting nutrients and removing gaseous waste from the body. It consists of the heart, which powers the whole process, the veins, arteries, and capillaries, which deliver oxygen to tissue at the cellular level. The cardiovascular system carries blood that is low in oxygen away from the heart to the lungs via arteries, where oxygen levels are restored through the air once oxygenated, this blood is then carried throughout the body via arteries, keeping our organs and tissue alive. The cardiovascular system is the workhorse of the body, continuously moving to push blood to the cells. If this important system ceases its work, the body dies.
