“One of the great things about being a director as a life choice is that it can never be mastered. Every story is its own kind of expedition, with its own set of challenges” (“Filmmaker IQ” 2). The Academy Award winning director, Ron Howard, said this quote. Directing a film is a well know job around the world. Movies have brought happiness to millions of people around the world. Directors are the main force behind the creation of this happiness. However, this job is not easy. Film directors are people that pull all of the film together with their expertise and eye for beauty, which explains why they are paid around 70,000 dollars and why this career demands specific qualifications. Many directors join the Directors Guild of America when coming into the profession. “To be accepted to this highly competitive program, an individual must have either a bachelor’s or associate degree or 2 years of experience and must complete a written exam and other assessments” (“Careers.org” 2). Quite a few directors take this route when joining this profession in order to learn the ways of the trade from someone else. “Feature film directors are basically in two employment groups: union and nonunion. To work on a studio film, one has to be a member of the Directors Guild of America-- in the union” (“Director” 61). Many directors started as runner on a set and worked their way up to the position as a director, learning the whole way up (“Creative Skill Set” 2). Many people want directors that have just raw experience so an assistant director is also likely to become a director. Most directors come from other jobs in the film industry such as screenwriter, actors, or cinematographers. The thought of being world-renowned is a major draw to this profession even if it is unlikely. When directing films, the idea one might have to interact with famous actors and people in the film business allows people to dream of meeting someone they have worshiped on their own televisions. These ideas, even if they are slim, are a major pull towards directing films. In fact, “employment in these occupations is expected to grow 11 percent during the 2006-16 decade” (“Careers.org” 4). In all, film directing is not a vocation that will be unwanted or un-needed any time soon.
