The Academy Award winning director, Ron Howard, said this quote. Directing a film is a well know job around the world. Movies have brought happiness to millions of people around the world. Directors are the main force behind the creation of this happiness. However, this job is not easy. Film directors are people that pull all of the film together with their expertise and eye for beauty, which explains why they are paid around 70,000 dollars and why this career demands specific qualifications. Many directors join the Directors Guild of America when coming into the profession. “To be accepted to this highly competitive program, an individual must have either a bachelor’s or associate degree or 2 years of experience and must complete a written exam and other assessments” (“Careers.org” 2). Quite a few directors take this route when joining this profession in order to learn the ways of the trade from someone else. “Feature film directors are basically in two employment groups: union and nonunion. To work on a studio film, one has to be a member of the Directors Guild of America-- in the union” (“Director” 61). Many directors started as runner on a set and worked their way up to the position as a director, learning the whole way up (“Creative Skill Set” 2). Many people want directors that have just raw experience so an assistant director is also likely to become a director. When directing films, the idea one might have to interact with famous actors and people in the film business allows people to dream of meeting someone they have worshiped on their own televisions. In all, film directing is not a vocation that will be unwanted or un-needed any time soon. In the film industry, there are directors who merely take someone else’s vision and express it in their own way on film, then there are those who take their own visions and use any means necessary to express their visions on film. The latter of these two types of directors are called auteurs. Not only do auteurs write the scripts from elements that they know and love in life, but they direct, produce, and sometimes act in their films as well. Three prime examples of these auteurs are: Kevin Smith, Spike Lee and Alfred Hitchcock.
Film making has gone through quite the substantial change since it’s initial coining just before the turn of the 19th century, and one would tend argue that the largest amount of this change has come quite recently or more so in the latter part of film’s history as a whole. One of the more prominent changes having taken place being the role of women in film. Once upon a time having a very set role in the industry, such as editing for example. To mention briefly the likes of Dede Allen, Verna Fields, Thelma Schoonmaker and so forth. Our female counterparts now occupy virtually every aspect of the film making industry that males do; and in many instances excel past us. Lisa Cholodenko grew up in Los Angeles and she began her film careers working as an assistant editor; however, she then moved to New York and earned an MFA in screenwriting and direction at the Columbia University School of arts. At Columbia University School of Arts, Cholodenko filmed her first short movie Dinner Party. Besides being a director, Lisa Cholodenko also was a film professor at Columbia University, an advisor and is currently on the Board of Governs of Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science. It was surprising to be able to find out how active Cholodenko is in the film industry and in the university she attended. This portrays how committed Cholodenko is to creating successful movies and to be a part of others film victory.
Hollywood has always been considered as one of the crown jewels of the entertainment industry. A true powerhouse of western cinema with a myriad of productions, each successful in the art of storytelling, and the maker of numerous directors, producers, writers and actors. With a reputation such as that, it’s no surprise that Hollywood is not only a symbol of success but also a beacon of hope for any aspiring newcomer.
The bread-and-butter of the film industry is the action movie. Each summer, audiences can expect to see car chases, gunfights and explosions, and studios can expect to see millions and millions of dollars in return. Though most viewers and critics see these movies as "fluff" entertainment (and rightfully so), there is one director that puts as much heart and soul into his "fluff" as any number of talented directors put into their "serious" movies. His name is John Woo. Even though you may not have heard about him, he is widely considered to be "the best contemporary director of action films working anywhere."
As you probably could have assumed, I love to watch any film I can get my hands on, and my once strong friendships are hanging on by a thread due to hours spent helping on short films of mine. Unlike some applicants, I come from a farming community with no film connection, none of my classmates are interested in pursuing a career like film, my school offers no film courses, and I have no film connection currently. Surely I sound like a poor fit for the Hollywood Reporter’s top film school, you may even wonder why I, without a single connection, would choose this field. Hopeful it may be understood me more through my background.

In New Hollywood films, the director was the key role, rather than the studio. The Hollywood studio system, an assembly-line process that had been rolling sturdy entertainment vehicles out of its plants for decades, had finally started to show its age in the early part of the decade (Rafferty, n.p). The once reliable stars were getting old and so were the directors. Moviegoers were drifting away to television and the young audience had more desires that were becoming incomprehensible to the old Hollywood powers.
A huge part of film and how film is made is how directors control physical elements of filming to display themes in their movies. This results in a powerful way of expression oneself through film. This can be done in many ways, including editing. Editing is taking footage and crafting that footage together to make the film and directors can use various techniques to make the best version of a film possible.
Steven Spielberg is known to be one of the innovators of the New Hollywood generation and also one of the most favored directors and producers in not only U.S film history but film history all over the world. Though Spielberg is living his dream now, it was an uphill battle for him to get to where he is currently in his career and in his personal life. Ever since he was a child, he knew that he wanted to create and direct films for all different types of audiences, but as he grew older, he began to realize that he wanted to do more than just create; he wanted to inspire. Spielberg took and still takes risks as a director and producer, which have led him to become so successful in the competitive world of directing.
With this short but very interesting and informative class I have just scratched the surface of the what it takes to make a full fleged film. It takes much more than I had presumed to make a movie in Hollywood. The number of people that it takes to make a minute of a movie let alone the entire movie was astonishing to me. There are many things that it takes to start making a movie but without an idea of some sort there is no movie to be made.
A film director is someone who directs the making and production of a film. They control the visual and artistic aspects of the film. It is their vision that is voiced in the film, they make the screenplay come to life so to say. While at the same time, regulating the crew and actors so that their vision can truly be shown in the film. In terms of a documentary director, it slightly differs.
