Romanticism is a movement in the history of ideas which came in late 18th century Western Europe. In “The Oval Portrait”, written by Edgar Allan Poe, a man sees a painting of a young girl in an old castle and tells about who the young girl is and what happens to her. Also, the story shows the conflict between the painter and his wife, the young girl and the symbol of the young girl. And, “Dr. Heidegger’s Experiment”, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, shows the human selfishness as the main characters, three old men and a woman, fight for the magic water, which makes them younger. In the both stories, “The Oval Portrait” and “Dr. Heidegger’s Experiment”, the main characters, the painter, three old men, and a woman shows the flaws of human nature, which is to focus only on what they believe is valuable and important, leading to the loss of what is actually most valuable.
“The Oval Portrait” illustrates the flaws of the human who only focuses on painting. The painter only focuses on his painting rather than his wife because he thinks painting is the most important thing in his life. He “takes glory in his work, which went on from hour to hour, and from day to day”(19). In the end of the story, he asks his wife to be a model for his painting. And, she cannot move, eat, and sleep, even though she is sick. However, the painter who does not know his wife is sick keeps drawing and “turns his eyes from canvas rarely”(19). His action only focusing on painting shows he is passionate and selfish because he does not care about how his wife loves him and hurts from him as he ignores her love for him. And, when he finishes his painting and says his wife in the painting looks alive, “she is dead”(19) in actual life. And, the author alludes that ...

... However, as they mishandle the vase, they lose their chances to live new life by being younger. Therefore, Hawthorne also shows the human selfishness as the old men and a woman fight each other to have more water. And, their greeds finally take their last chance to be younger.
Both “The Oval Portrait” and “Dr. Heidegger’s Experiment” depict human selfishness which is concentrating on what they believe is important and precious. And, the selfishness leads humans to lose what is actually most valuable. For instance, the painter loses his wife as he focuses on his painting rather than illness of his wife. And, the three old men and a woman also loses the water which make them look younger because they fight to have more water than any others. In addition, those stories shows the feature of American Romantic Literature, which is talking about the flaws in the society.
Romanticism is the movement in the arts and literature that originated in the late 18th century, emphasizing inspiration, subjectivity, and the primacy of the individual. This idea of Romanticism gave power to the individual that they never once had; people believed that others are inherently good. This time of dynamic and radical changes led to many writers who voiced their opinion on different matters of various concern. People were able to voice their opinion much more than they have in the past giving more power to the individual. It was this attitude that writers had that criticized many institutions. Among these writers is Robert Burns, in the texts To a Mouse and To a Louse, they contain three important messages of different attitudes, irony, and being thankful for what you have.

In her essay, “Housewives and Homework: The Lacemakers of Narsapur,” Chandra Talpade Mohanty focused on how men sold products that women produced and profited from women’s work. The essay basically pointed out how work can be defined according to sexual identity. It made me wonder if American women are still perceived by men in society as being housewives even though some of us are doctors, lawyers, teachers etc. Is the work that women do seen as what Mohanty pointed out in her essay as “leisure time activities”? I think that to some extent men believe that women’s sole purpose on Earth is to be their wives/partners and to be good mothers to their children. Even though we “leisurely,” as Mohanty so plainly categorized our work according to men in India, go out to our different careers or occupations everyday, we are not truly seen as providers or given credit for being part providers for the family. Romanticism was a literary movement that occurred in the late eighteenth century to the mid nineteenth century which shifted the focus of literature from puritan works, to works which revolved around imagination, the beauty of nature, the individual, and the value of emotion over intellect. The ideas of the movement were quite revolutionary as earlier literature was inhibited by the need to focus on society and the rational world it effected. Romanticism allowed writers to be more creative with there stories and to explore an irrational world which before, would have been at the very least frowned upon if not outright rejected. The short story, “Young Goodman Brown” by Nathaniel Hawthorne is an example of a romantic work because it showcases the individual over society, exalts emotion and intuition over reason, and keeps a strong focus on nature throughout the story.

Romanticism was the “reaction against artistic styles of classical antiquity, which was neoclassicism.” Neoclassicists focused on the power of reasoning to discover the truth while Romantics focused on the hope to transform the world through the power of imagination. They had a deep love for nature (Furst 302). The aspects of romanticism are important; they are the beliefs of this period. Romanticism was a movement in art and literature in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in revolt against the Neoclassicism of the previous centuries. The romanticism movement in literature consists of a few of the following characteristics: intuition over fact, imagination over fact, and the stretch and alteration of the truth. The death of a protagonist may be prolonged and/or exaggerated, but the main point was to signify the struggle of the individual trying to break free, which was shown in “The Fall of the House Usher” (Prentice Hall Literature 322).
Gender role is a set of expectations set forth by society about the ways in which men and women are “supposed” to behave based on their gender. In the Era of which we live, the expectations are closer than ever to being distinct. Many people of my generation, and younger, may not completely understand this question, due to the fact that it is almost the norm to see single parent homes and to have both parents working full time. The stay at home mother is almost a thing of the past. In some situations the “gender role” has been completely switched, with the father being the stay at home parent. This concept is completely foreign to most elderly citizens such as our grandparents. If you look back at history, the father was the breadwinner and the mother stayed home to care for the children, which families back then were much larger. You may be pondering, what events in history lead to such a dramatic change in the family schematics? Well, we are going to delve into this lengthy controversial and revolutionary historic cultivation. First I am going to touch on a few historic events that altered the typical American family, followed by a few waves of the feminist movement, as well as some revolutionizing amendments to the Constitution yielding more rights to females which ultimately altered the workplace as well as the family.
Recently, within the past few decades, the role of women in Judaism has dramatically improved. The rippling effect of the Women’s Rights Movement empowered Jewish women to push for widespread reform of Judaic law. Since Biblical times, women in general were held to an inferior level compared to men, and this was no different for Jewish women. However, big strides have been made within the past century to elevate the status of the Jewish woman in the public sphere as well in the privacy of their homes.
Despite its name, the Romantic literary period has little to nothing to do with love and romance that often comes with love; instead it focuses on the expression of feelings and imagination. Romanticism originally started in Europe, first seen in Germany in the eighteenth century, and began influencing American writers in the 1800s. The movement lasts for sixty years and is a rejection of a rationalist period of logic and reason. Gary Arpin, author of multiple selections in Elements of Literature: Fifth Course, Literature of The United States, presents the idea that, “To the Romantic sensibility, the imagination, spontaneity, individual feelings and wild nature were of greater value than reason, logic, planning and cultivation” (143). The Romantic author rejects logic and writes wild, spontaneous stories and poems inspired by myths, folk tales, and even the supernatural. Not only do the Romantics reject logic and reasoning, they praise innocence, youthfulness and creativity as well as the beauty and refuge that they so often find in nature.
The roles of women changed drastically between 1950’s and 1970’s due to the political, economic, and social issues, but women’s lives also stayed close to the way they had always been. The lives of women changed in a plethora of ways throughout the years. “We believe that women can achieve such equality only by accepting to full the challenges and responsibilities they share with all other people in our society, as part of the decision-making mainstream of American political, economic, and social life” (Statement of Purpose, 1966).

The Role of Women in Society Women are important in our society. Every woman has her own job or duty in this modern society in which men are still the strongest gender. We can t forget that women s life is a lot more complicated than a man s life. A woman has to take care of her own personal life and if she is a mother, she has to take care also about her children s life, too. Marriaged women have lots of worries and believe it or not, they carry out a more stressful life than married men.
The role women play in today’s society is a drastic change from the previous role. Women used to be confined to the superiority of the man. Physically, mentally, and emotionally abused, belittled, embarrassed, and silenced. These are just a few examples of the emotion from the isolated treatment of the past. A woman’s role in today’s society is more valued than ever before.

A women's role has changed tremendously and is making its greatest impact in our society today. Many years ago, women's contribution to society was limited and controlled by men. Women are standing tall and are playing a major role in many important areas. Women's role has changed at an accelerating rate and have part in areas such as Politics, Professional Training Jobs, Medicine,Business and Law. Formerly they were not part of any political matter, but they have advanced in many aspects. For example, women have attained power and have been growing in political office.
