There are many education requirements needed to become a principal. Typically a principal must first serve as a teacher (Principal). Most school districts look for an administrator with five or more years of work experience in a related occupation (Occupational Outlook Handbook). After serving as a teacher for a period of time many schools would find an administrator candidate more desirable for hire (Principal). To become certified as a teacher one can usually enter a program at a four-year university (Principal). Certification usually requires a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and completion of a teacher education program (Principal). All states have different requirements, but some have programs for aspiring principals who have not obtained a degree in education administration or leadership (Occupational Outlook Handbook). According to Mr. Fretueg, the Elementary School Principal at Catlin Grade School, most college classes do not prepare one for becoming a principal. He did find Law of Education to be a helpful class, however. Beau Fretueg, like many administrators, is a firm believer that the best preparation for this career is real life experience. He also found his required practicum helpful (Fretueg). Possessing a Ph.D is not required, but many school districts prefer applicants who have taken steps to achieve a degree of higher education.

The major concepts of this article relate to the ineffectiveness of school leadership programs. Arthur Levine found that a majority of the programs were inadequate. He noted four areas in which these programs lacked efficiency. These areas of concern were the rise in off-campus low quality programs, weak research-intensive universities that are working towards awarding doctoral degrees in administration, competition for students is causing lowered program quality and admission criteria, and the fact that state and local school districts are adding to the problem by salary incentives for advanced degrees. Levine noted several major issues that affect school administration programs. First, he revealed that many people who had finished these programs agreed that the curriculum was irrelevant; they said that it did prepare them to deal with "on-the-job issues." Second, the issues of low admission and graduation standards were addressed. The study illustrated how many schools lower their standards to increase admission and create tuition "cash cows." Third, he discussed the issue of these schools having weak faculties.
The job outlook for the physical education teacher job market is expected to grow by 12.2% between 2012 and 2022. This increase is pretty close to the rate the athletic director field is supposed to increase. A good leader will take advantage of the tools around them, knowing that every building has individuals who offer their very own strengths. In focusing on the individual teacher strengths of each specific teacher, a rapport can be built, but most importantly, the outcome will be a stronger building because of the process of spreading the wealth.
Almost all teachers, certainly all public school teachers who want to obtain tenure, will seek and complete a master's level of study in the subject that they are teaching, or in education. This is not a benchmark to measure teachers by, but a requirement in all of America's public school districts. Not all will continue to a doctoral study. Many teachers find satisfaction with their economic, career and development without pursuing a doctorate. There are important benchmarks of doctoral study to consider before beginning.
Chapter one of Ten Traits of Highly Effective Principals opens with one of the most influential traits of what an effective principal should possess, the communication trait. To be successful in any venue in life, you must be able to communicate with people; this is especially true in the education world. Principals are responsible for communicating with people in all walks of life, parents, students, teacher, administrative office personnel and the general public, as an administrator, you must make each of these individuals feel a sense of trust and belonging while communicating with them. Principals use conversations and gesture to build confidence and open lines of communication for learning and growth.
I do believe that Amber has a realistic perspective about her role as assistant principal. She recognizes that part of her responsibility is dealing with discipline issues and supervising the students but she also desires to work closely with the teachers in order to help them develop their professional goals and instructional methods. She is reflective and understands that as a teacher she “benefited from the feedback and guidance she received from her principal” and she wants to do the same for the staff at this school (Kowalski, p. 124). I believe she is committed to the students and faculty and wants to bring about change in order to improve the academic process for the students.
Thomas Sergiovanni (2015) describes three essential dimensions of leadership as “the heart, head, and hand of leadership.” The heart describes those characteristics within the school leader that reflect personal “beliefs, values, and dreams.” The head of leadership refers to the practice of teaching and educating. The hand of leadership reflects actions taken by school leaders with respect to management behaviors. (p. 5) Within these elements, there is room for personal choice in how leadership is practiced and it is incumbent on new principals to find an individual leadership style that responds to the uniqueness of each school.
Administration role has to be learnt for effectiveness which implies: Organization, Controlling, Commanding, Planning and forecasting are all achieved through study.

States usually require candidates to pass a teaching certification test, on top of test that shows their knowledge in the subject they will teach later

The role and responsibilities of a teacher is very complex. Teachers are responsible for making sure their learners acquire the knowledge they need, but also achieve their qualification by the end of the course in a safe learning environment, so they have the skills and experience they need to start their careers. To achieve that goal a teacher must be creative, professional, flexible and knowledgeable enough to deal with daily challenges and find different ways to help their learners needs. Preparing to succeed starts in early education programs where students learn discipline, structure, and organization in a safe learning environment. A teacher's positive relationship, high expectations and confidence in students allow for students to learn in an environment that is conducive for learning. Varied student activities and instructional methods arranged for students to engage in, allows for individuality, growth and a quality education. School administrators have an important role in their community. Their professional behavior must be respected and their leadership must be accepted by those that they serve. They follow the National Association of Elementary School Principals and National Association of Secondary School Principals (NAESP/NASSP) ethical code of behavior. This ethical code helps to assist the profession in protecting those deserving its protection. It also helps to raise the confidence and conscience of administrators on behavioral issues. Fundamental ethical principles are always present to guide administrators in confronting, predicting or defining situations. The administrator serves in a public school. He/she is responsible for providing educational opportunities to all and displaying exemplary professional leadership. The motivational factor for the educational administrators is to do what is best for the student. This is important because students are the future of our country.
