There are many education requirements needed to become a principal. Typically a principal must first serve as a teacher (Principal). Most school districts look for an administrator with five or more years of work experience in a related occupation (Occupational Outlook Handbook). After serving as a teacher for a period of time many schools would find an administrator candidate more desirable for hire (Principal). To become certified as a teacher one can usually enter a program at a four-year university (Principal). Certification usually requires a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and completion of a teacher education program (Principal). Education requirements for teachers and administrators vary by state, but in most cases teacher education programs take one year to complete (Principal).

All states have different requirements, but some have programs for aspiring principals who have not obtained a degree in education administration or leadership (Occupational Outlook Handbook). According to Mr. Fretueg, the Elementary School Principal at Catlin Grade School, most college classes do not prepare one for becoming a principal. He did find Law of Education to be a helpful class, however. Beau Fretueg, like many administrators, is a firm believer that the best preparation for this career is real life experience. He also found his required practicum helpful (Fretueg). Possessing a Ph.D is not required, but many school districts prefer applicants who have taken steps to achieve a degree of higher education.
