Recommended: Development of rock and roll music

How did rock and roll all start? According to “Larry Birnbaum, author of the new book "Before Elvis" everyone thinks they know the story of rock and roll” (Voice of America, 2013). Birnbaum explains if you ask any average person where rock and roll came from they will say it came from Blues, Delta Blues like Robert Johnson or Muddy Waters, but he disagrees. He points out that “Little Red Rooster” version of the Blues did not become part of rock music until the 1960’s, when the Rolling Stones embraces Delta Blues. Also, other stories that rock came from rhythm and blues, or R&B? He states it doesn’t tell the whole story.” When they do these histories of rock ‘n’ roll, they’ll say that rock ‘n’ roll came from R&B” (Voice of America, 2013). Every artist builds from the previous generation’s work.

Bands start to tour drawing large crowds, playing in clubs, and theaters. A clear distinction emerges between Top 40 radio and FM album oriented rock radio stations. The diversity of music along with expanding market allows for a wide variety of new rock styles to emerge. “The early seventies are dominated by singer songwriters and soft rock” (Rock Music Timeline.com, 2016). MTV was launched in 1981 in 300 U.S. cable TV systems, by 1983 it was available in 2,000 cable systems. VHI is launched in 1984 with more classic rock format. Records and concerts to benefit charity are supported by many rock music artist, these include “Band Aid”, “We Are The World”, plus the “Live Aid” and “Farm Aid” concerts (Rock Music Timeline.com, 2016).
