Imagine that someone was currently going into an open heart surgery. This is a highly invasive surgery that could take a very long time to recover from. This was once an irrefutable fact; however, this is no longer true. Due to recent advances in medical technology a once long recovery period has now been replaced by a much shorter one thanks to the assistance of robots. Occupations such as a surgeon, are now rapidly embracing the use of robots, such as the Da Vinci, to decrease the invasiveness of a once dehabilitating surgery. Robotic surgery, in its quintessence, is simply surgery that is greatly assisted by the use of a robotic arm. A person who is squeamish would not want to partake in the career of being a surgeon. The massive amount of time required and money required to attain an American Board of Surgeons, or A.B.S. certification may be considered a negative aspect of this career. A person wanting to become a surgeon must acquire a bachelors degree, four years of medical school, and a minimum of three years of a residency; however, the residency can stretch up to eight years long depending on the specialty that said person would like to practice (Occupational Outlook Handbook). This can be a very costly amount of school. The median price for four year schools for in state tuition in the Midwest is $18,391 a year and $31,701 year for out of state tuition room and board included,(“Trends in College Pricing 2013”). The choice of undergraduate school is very important because it can establish the quality of medical school one is accepted into. Also, the choice of undergraduate school can establish the ease of getting into a medical school, because just as colleges pay special attention to certain high schools; medical schools pay special attention to certain colleges. One should choose a school that is well known for its science programs, such as Missouri S and T, University of Texas, and University of Florida,( "Best Colleges for Pre-Med - Do It Yourself College Rankings."). Medical schools are also very expensive as well. According to Bloomberg, the median tution cost fo medical schools in the nation was $ 50,309 a year.
