When you hear Robotics you think of science and space, but in the medical field they are also using robotics to perform certain surgeries. So you ask what exactly is robotic surgery? Robotic surgery is a procedure that is performed by a surgeon using a computer with small surgical tools that is attached to a robotic arm. Both computer assisted and robotic assisted surgeries are new developments that use robotics in surgical procedures to help aid surgeons. “The term “robot” originated from the Czech word “robota” which means forced labor” (Palep, 2009). Many years ago robots were only known as machines that performed certain repeated tasks, but with new technologies they have become intelligent and now have characteristics that are human-like. Though robots are still just machines that have made advancements in what they can do such as performing tasks that are precise and dangerous that were deemed impossible for the human to perform. Today, robots are emerging in the medical profession and are being used by surgeons performing minimally invasive surgery.
Robotic assisted surgery is a new technology we will be talking about. Robotic assisted surgery is a new way to do surgery that is minimally invasive, this is done by the surgeon using a robot to control medical instruments. “The surgical robot is an automatic computer-controlled device that can be programmed to aid in the programming, positioning and manipulation of surgical tools” (Morris, 2005). They can carry out complex tasks, but they are in no way intended to take the place of a live surgeon but is intended to be used as an extension that are controlled by the surgeon. Surgeons are able to use “telemanipulators which is a remote manipulator that allows the surgeon to ...

...ssaud et al., 2011). The robot’s arm is used as the surgeon arm that is controlled by the surgeon themselves.
The use of this new technology allows surgeons to perform surgical tasks that can be more complex such as open surgeries or laparoscopic surgeries cannot perform. Robotic assisted surgeries has the advantages of better accuracy and better patient results, although these are great advantages there are disadvantages as well such as the risk of malfunctioning computers or the robot can malfunction, the surgeon has less control over the safety of the patient, the robot is bulky and takes up space in the operating room, and the fact that it is a longer procedure compared to a standard surgery.” A robotic procedure can also take longer than a standard laparoscopic surgery because it takes more time to set up for the surgery when using robotics” (Dong, 2012).
Surgical technologist have a fulfilling and adventurous job, being a technical assistant to the surgeon’s, with a number of tasks ahead of them, and problems that will go on, with an outcoming salary that will make a good living in life.
St. Joseph’s Hospital of Atlanta is a not-for-profit hospital founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1880. This is a 410-bed acute care hospital that has been recognized throughout the Southeast as one of the leading specialty-referral hospitals. To be noted, St. Joseph’s Hospital is considered to be Atlanta’s oldest hospital and the only Catholic hospital in Atlanta area. “St. Joseph’s was the first hospital in Georgia to perform robotic-assisted, totally-endoscopic closed-chest heart surgery, according to the hospital”. St. Joseph’s is renowned for its most comprehensive minimally invasive robotic surgery program in the world and is the region’s preeminent provider of cardiac, vascular oncology and orthopedic services. Others services are available, such as: neurologic, vascular, gastrointestinal, respiratory, orthopaedic, and cancer care, among other specialties. St. Joseph’s is ranked amongst the 50 top hospitals and has been recognized as one of a few hospitals around the world to receive Magnet Recognition for Nursing Excellence. The medical staff consists of more than approximately 750 physicians, with research services and the most advanced technology available.
Recently, articular surgery robot named ‘ROBODOC’ or ‘RIO’ has been widely used for arthritis or arthroplasty. Both robots consist of arthroscope and tiny surgical instruments. Many surgeons estimated that articular surgery using these robots is more accurate, elaborate than using an arthroscope and small surgical instrument,
Robotic Surgery is an emerging technology that utilizes purpose-built robots to perform surgical procedures on patients. At present these robots are not autonomous, they are controlled by a surgeon at all times.
According to agency of health care research and quality it is estimated that almost one third of health care spending is due to inpatient surgical procedures and it also estimates that average hospital costs has been increased from $ 9,100 in 2003 to $11,000 in 2013. [4] Some major reasons for this increase in costs includes lack of coordination, risk associated with complicated surgical procedures, poor patient engagement in decision making, quality requirements and etc. The perioperative surgical homes are very effective in solving these problems and achieve better surgical outcomes as it is a coordinated care which is led by multi specialty physicians who provides continuum of care to patients from the time of decision to 30 days after discharge of the patient i.e., it is incorporated in to include all three phases of surgery; perioperative, intra-operative and postoperative
Surgical technologists are members of the surgical team who work in the operating room with surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists, and other personnel before, during and after surgery. Techs are basically considered the surgeons “right hand man”. They may prepare a patient for surgery by washing, shaving, and disinfecting where the incision may be. They arrange the equipment, instruments, and supplies in the operating room according to the preference of the surgeons and nurses (Ferguson 537). During the operation, they count all equipment used, and hold retractors and cut sutures as directed. Following the operation, they may clean and restock the OR and sterilize the used equipment (Ferguson 538).

I chose the Da Vinci Surgical system as my topic because I am interested into going to physical therapy or into the orthopedics field after undergrad. Surgical equipment is highly important due to the hundreds of accidents that happen and also the high percentage of diseases. As these incidents occur it is important to consider the safety of the patient when it comes to cutting into their bodies. With the invention of the Da Vinci Surgical system it helped with vision and different viewpoints of the patient’s body and also improves precision. It is important to have a machine or tool for more than one type of surgery, one to use on patients with different injuries or diseases. Overall, this surgical system helps improve and help further research how precise and how in control a surgeon can be.
The medical field has revolutionized the health and well being of society. Throughout the decades, the medical field has been through sweeping changes that leave society astonished. It seems like each year that passes by, there is a new technological advancement that modernizes the medical field. Not only do these advancements modernize medicine, but they in return aid doctors, nurses, and specialists by improving their effectiveness within the field. About ten years ago, the da Vinci Surgical System was introduced to hospitals and the medical field, in general because the FDA had finally approved the system within the United States (Dunkin). The da Vinci Surgical System, also known basically as robotic surgery, introduced the use of a surgical robot, which is operated by the doctor himself using a controlled manipulator (Declan et al.). Prior to the invention of robot-assisted surgeries, most surgeons simply did a typical laparoscopic surgery on a patient. Laparoscopic surgery is “a type of surgery performed through several small incisions, rather than one (or more) large ones as in standard "open" surgery” (Schmitz). Through the development of superior technology, such as the surgical robot; it brought about changes that effected doctors, patients, and the medical world.
Surgery comes from Greek via Latin: meaning "hand work". Surgery is an ancient medical procedure that uses specific techniques on a patient to investigate and treat a small or severe condition such as disease or injury. Surgery can be used for different reasons; some might be to help improve body function or appearance, and some maybe for religious reasons. There are many types of surgeries (e.g. neuro, cardiac, plastic, oral, podiatric etc., etc.). Surgery originally started in France in the 16th century, but was very rarely used. This French surgery was also only preformed for minor uses. Surgery back then was very risky and only a few patients survived. Now you might be thinking, what kind of doctors were those idiots, but think again, does surgery only need a very highly educated surgeon? The simple answer is no. The reason or should I say the greatest reason was that of the tools.
Biomechanical engineering is driven by needs similar to those of biomedical engineering. There is always a constant need to improve medical equipment while keeping it cost efficient. These are the two main needs for all biomedical engineers. Biomechanical engineering is specifically dedicated to applying the scientific of knowledge mechanical systems and engineering to biology and the human body. One of the many needs that drives this biomedical subfield is society’s need for more advanced equipment and machinery. Some recent advances show this need. In the last decade, biomechanical engineers have invented and innovated new robots and machines that can assist a surgeon in surgery or serve as an artificial liver. These machines satisfy the need to improve and innovate new equipment that can save lives and improve how people in the medical field perform their
Since the beginning of time, human beings have been in search of ways to advance life as we know it. Every single day, somewhere in the world, technology is being transformed and an exciting new piece is birthed into society. Perhaps, one of the most influential advances is in our ever evolving medical profession. Thus, as technology continues to change the world as we know it, it is sweeping the medical field right along with it. Surgical procedures are being drastically improved with the use of robotic technology called da Vinci.
