Recommended: Concept Of Love
Some people may think that love is a simple emotion that we all feel, but is it really? Love is a subject that many scientists and specialists have done large amounts of research on and something that they are still researching today. Love is a psychological concept and as humans grow, our minds and the way that we think changes. There is one theory that cuts the concept of love into three main parts. This theory was developed by Robert Sternberg and is called the Triangular Theory of Love (Hock, 2016). This theory cuts the concept of love into three main concepts: Intimacy, Commitment, and Passion. All three of these main points together is what Sternberg calls Consummate Love, which is the most complete form of love two people can possess. …show more content…
As mentioned in Human Sexuality by Roger R. Hock, “Imagine that you love someone with whom you have not yet established any intimacy and no real passion exists between you (Hock, 2016.)” This is an example of having commitment, but lacking the other two main concepts of Sternberg’s Triangular Theory of Love. Commitment can be combined with intimacy, which is called Companionate Love. This combination is missing the passion, which means that the relationship is missing the heat, or desire. A relationship could last without passion, but it wouldn’t have any arousal to it. It would be a bland relationship without much passion in …show more content…
Consummate Love is the combination of passion, intimacy, and commitment. It’s what Sternberg applies as the perfect combination of all three main concepts of his Triangular Theory of Love. Not all couple may be apply to get consummate love at first, but with time and effort one can achieve this. However, the same effort must be maintained otherwise the consummate love can fade away over time. When a couple achieves consummate love, both partners are at the perfect level of comfort with each other. It’s also when both partners have good amounts of energy, trust, and compassion in their relationship. It’s like being in the middle of the
The notion behind loving someone is simply very complicated and esoteric in nature. People often describe a certain chemistry, as in a certain attraction, needed between two individuals who are in love, but Barbara Fredrickson is able to coordinate the definition of love on the basis of chemicals. Barbara Fredrickson is able to provide the definition of love on the deductive reasoning based on chemistry, biology, and neurology explained in Love 2.0: How our Supreme Emotion Affects Everything we Feel, Think, Do, and Become. As Barbara explains, “With each micro-moment of love, then, you climb another rung on the spiraling ladder that lifts you up to your higher ground, to richer and more compassionate social relationships, to greater resilience and wisdom, and to better physical health.” (121).
Love is defined as a feeling of strong or constant affection for a person. Faithfulness is often defined as true to one's word, promises, vows, or being loyal. In Homer’s famous story, The Odyssey, Odysseus and Penelope show their true love for one another, and how a good marriage can stay together. In “Bound by Love and Disability, and Keeping a Vow Until the End” you can take away that Edwin and Noemi love each other dearly. Marriages do not always turn out the way you want, but true love can make good things happen.
... like…togetherness or something”. Their definition of love contains key intimacy characteristics with definitions like “integral part of whom you are”, “deep connection”, “happiness”, and “togetherness”. This individual touches upon love in a much more meaningful and emotional closeness compared to the previous individual who’d described it in a more physical and excitable manner. This form of love follows passion, and plays a role in the future commitment of two individuals. Like passion, this concept is also a stepping stone towards allowing young adults to complete their task of intimacy vs. isolation. Intimacy greatly influences romantic relationships, and is a concept that many young adults preoccupy themselves with during their development.
In this chapter 2 of Knox and Schacht the authors explain the way to conceptualize love as well as all the aspects that are incorporated into love. The ways in which people view romantic and realistic love and how here in America we look at romantic love in a sort of fairy tale way. The authors explain the different styles of love that people can be categorized under in different relationships. Knox and Schacht take a look at arranged marriages in other countries and how love is intended to come after you are married and not before Knox and Schacht 2016, pg. 37-45). If relationships are focused on sexual attraction it takes away from simply being friends with a person which can also lead us to not actually seeing a person for who they really
There is no real love without intrinsic characteristics because the two traits are mutually exclusive. However, if one does not love based on characteristics, then the person receiving love receives on empty grounds. Concerning Nozick definition, true romantic love includes loving someone simply for his or her being or for his or her existence. However, I see no reason why a relationship would continue based on loving your partner personality. Nozick notes that when you love based on character, the partner might change his or her character while in the relationship or marriage and the relationship might break or
Around the GCU campus, marriage and engagement is in the air. Men and women who have been together from a few months to a few years have made the decision to commit to each other for the rest of their life. In the Bible, there are four different Greek words that mean love: agape (Godly), eros (erotic), storge (family), and philia (friendship). In social psychology, there are three main types of love that combine to form different types of love. In Sternberg’s Triangular Theory of Love, there are three main types of love: liking (intimacy alone), empty love (commitment alone), and infatuation (passion alone) (Kassin, Fein, & Markus, 2013). When intimacy, commitment, and passion are combined, an experience known as consummate

Psychologist Robert Sternberg developed the "Triangular Theory of Love" which defines the three components of love needed for a "perfect" relationship as commitment, passion, and intimacy (companionship) (Wikipedia). "The amount of love one experiences depends on the absolute strength of these three components, and the type of love one experiences depends on their strengths relative to each other" (Wikipedia). In Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, she introduces five couples which enter into marriages in all different types of love. Mr. and Mrs. Bennet have an infatuated love that fades to no love at all, Charlotte and Mr. Collins enter into an empty love, Lydia and Mr. Wickham fall into a fatuous love, Jane and Mr. Bingley focus on a companionate love, and finally, Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy find an all consummate love for each other. Throughout the novel, Austen uses these five variations of love to employ characters and define their futures.
Love is a commitment where two people must persevere, “Then while we live, in love let’s so persever/ That when we live no more we may live ever” (Bradstreet,11). Bradstreet describes a love in which two people are in a committed relationship, found toward the end of the poem
n Robert Sternberg 's triangular theory of love, love is separated down into three different components. Passion, Intimacy, and Commitment are the three components of love and take on different roles in the theory of love. Passion involves physical and sexual attraction to the someone of interest. The feeling of excitement is also associated with passion, individuals tend to very excited to see their partner. Intimacy involves security, a sense of comfort and trust. If information about oneself is shared that it will be safe in the person of interest hands. Communication is the key element in this component. Commitment involves a decision of forming a long term relationship based on feelings for someone of interest. This in modern time in called
Love is commitment. To love means to commit oneself without guarantee, to give oneself completely in the hope that our love will produce love in the loved person. Commitment can be called the backbone or building block of love. In other words, commitment is needed in order to build a stable and trusting relationship. Without commitment, love would not be able to grow and flourish. It can be extremely demanding on someone who isn't ready or sure that they want to commit to another person.
Love is an interpersonal relationship developed, maintained, and possibly destroyed through communication, but also can be enhanced by communication. Love is often described as a feeling of closeness, caring, intimacy and commitment between two people. There are six different types of love: eros, ludus, storge, pragma, mania, and
All relationships have the stage of new love, but the companionate stage is what allows the relationship to last. The passion in a relationship starts and can affect what the relationship could turn into. Haidt quotes Ellen Berscheid and Elaine Walster, two social psychologists, as they explain passionate love as a “wildly emotional state in which tender and sexual feelings, elation and pain, anxiety and relief, altruism and jealousy coexist in a confusion of feelings” (124), while companionate love was also described by Berscheid and Walster as “affection we feel for those with whom our lives are deeply intertwined” (125). The main difference between the two types of love is, passionate love can, and most likely will, fade overtime; it does not evolve into companionate love. Passionate and companionate are two bases of love that develop at their own pace with no real r...
Love is ubiquitous and universal, and we have all encountered and relished in the power of love. Many people associate the meaning of love with feelings of strong affection and personal attachment. While this is very accurate, there are several different aspects of love that we neglect to acknowledge. Psychologist Barbara Fredrickson steps up and takes up this challenge in convergence with the magic of science. In doing so, she concludes that the things in which our brain thinks love is, are actually just the products of love. Love itself is something much greater and it is worth figuring out what this supreme emotion is all about. Fredrickson’s work primarily centered around the broaden-and-build theory, in which states “positive emotions
For a healthy relationship, one needs to be able to function without total dependence on their mate. There are three main aspects of love. According to the triangular theory of love, these three components include intimacy, passion, and decision/commitment. Intimacy is the feeling of being connected and close to another person. It is getting to know the person beyond the friendship level and understanding them on a romantic level.
