Some observers of contemporary American politics claim that Hutchins is right, that democracy is threatened by the indifference of people to public affairs. Do u agree? The death of democracy is not likely to be an assassination by ambush. It will be a slow extinction from apathy, indifference and undernourishment. This is a very important issue, because this subject of matter cannot happen with notice and hard planning. Therefore, democracy can collapse with the population becoming dying out.
The state needs democracy. Such as, the United States is under the rule of democratic and republicans. This was a very good idea in cooperation from the public and their representatives. Without the democratic, the people would never listen and hate their country because they wouldn't feel the United States and the representatives are fair and reasonable. The government of the United States uses the thoughts of the public and makes their decision based on what the people want and what is best for the whole state and its people. The people all abide by the rules of the United States because they were really the ones to suggest these laws in the first place for more fairness. If the government had not listened to their people the whole system would collapse.
Another example is the twisted story of the three little pigs. They were a family of pigs being set into the real world. They decide to go their own ways because they all wanted their own ways of life and living. One making a strawed house, another making a stick house and another making a house with leave all over and bamboo sticks. They all met up with a wolf and as you know he replies," I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll blow your house down," and with that blows all the 3 houses down with no real good foundation because they had gone on their own. When the constitution was written, the idea of universal suffrage was too radical for our founding fathers to address. They decided to leave the states with the authority to decide the requirements for voting. (Janda) By allowing the states to decide who voted, the authors had not intended for each state's discriminations to prevent the country from maintaining true democracy. However, by not setting up a nationwide regulation, the authors launched the country into a century and a half long fight for freedom and equality for all.
In my opinion, the relationship between the Federal government and the States is unclear whether which institution has the authority to implement legislations. The vagueness of the American constitution particularly in the 10th Amendment of the Constitution that quote ” The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.” The ambiguous of the American Constitution may be the main cause of the over power of Federal government.
The principle of federalism was established by the Constitution to protect the country from tyranny as well. In this case, it is said that the national government cannot over power the fifty states. In the fifty states, each state consists of two democratic representatives.
In Plato’s Republic , Socrates states how a democracy could deteriorate and fall into lower regime. There are many characteristics when it comes to the kind of people that occupy a democratic regime. Although there are many downfalls, there are certain ways that a democracy and other regimes could be saved.
In comparing the average citizen in a democratic nation, say the United States, to that of a non-democratic nation, for instance Egypt, it will be found that the citizen in the democratic nation is generally better off – free of persecution, free from fear of the authorities, and free to express his opinions on governmental matters. And while national conflicts occur everywhere, incidents like violent revolts have shown to be more prevalent in nations where citizens are not allowed to choose who governs them. It is slightly paradoxical that democracy, so inherently flawed in theory, can lead to such successful outcomes in practice. The question, then, becomes: “If democracy has so many weaknesses, why does it work?”
There have been enormous efforts to spread democracy as a political system throughout the world by the developed democratic countries and the international development organizations including the World Bank. By the late 1990s the United States alone spent over a half billion dollars to promote democratic expansion throughout the world (Diamond, 2003). These were done considering that the democratic system leads towards development. As a result in the late 20th century we saw a huge political transformation towards democracy. During the last few decades a huge number of countries adopted democracy as their political system. However, it retain a big question how far democracy is successful in bringing development of a country? At this stage, some people also criticizes the effort of democratization arguing that it is done without considering the context of a country, sometimes democracy is not ideal for all countries and it is an effort to extinct diversity of political system. In studying the literature regarding the debate, we found a paradoxical relationship between democracy and development. Some argue that democracy has failed to ensure expected outcomes in terms of development. While others confronted that democracy has a considerable impact on development. Another group of people argue that form of political system actually does not have any impact on development process. Robert Maynard Hutchins was the third son born on January 17, 1899 to a Presbyterian minister. HI grandfather was also a preacher but this would not be the path in life that Hutchins would choose. Born in Brooklyn, New York, his family moved to Ohio when he was eight years old. It was in Oberlin Ohio where Robert would go to school; at first the Academy and then the Oberlin College. Timing is crucial in life, and it was when Robert turned 18 years old the United States would enter World War One. Robert and his brother William joined the ambulatory services branch of the Army. He was briefly deployed to Italy but much of his time was spent in Oberlin at a fair grounds creating and constructing barracks. After the war he was granted a medal of honor from Italy (Britannica).
As indicated previously, the developmental stage of a country is a large determining factor as to whether or not democracy can truly survive in the country. A developed country that is able to practice democracy must have a strong fundamental basis, strong support, participation, minimum apathy and above all must maintain the trust of the citizens it holds in order to remain in close ties with the people they represent. On the topic of trust, a fair and democratic government must avoid corruption at all cost. It is its sovereignty that a democratic union holds on dearly to so that it is recognized and followed. Throughout history different types of instrumental regimes have been in tact so civilizations remained structured and cohesive. As humanity advanced, governments obligingly followed. Although there have been hiccups from the ancient times to modern day, one type of government, democracy, has proven to be the most effective and adaptive. As quoted by Winston Churchill, democracy is the best form of government that has existed. This is true because the heart of democracy is reliant, dependent, and thrives on the populaces desires; which gives them the ability for maintaining the right to choose, over time it adjusts and fixes itself to engulf the prominent troubling issues, and people have the right of electing the person they deem appropriate and can denounce them once they no longer appease them. In this paper, the benefits of democracy are outlined, compared to autocratic communism, and finally the flaws of democracy are illustrated.
Democracy, in its truest sense, does not exist. There is no political authority currently existing where every person contributes an equal amount to the decision-making process of the authority’s directives. The election of officials and representatives by the populace does not, in itself, automatically result in the most democratic and widely accepted directives being enacted. However, this does not decrease the political power of the authorities, nor does it limit their practical power over their jurisdictions.
