The War On Terror
“You can’t win the war on crime, or the war on terror. You can’t repeal human nature.” (Robert Harris). Robert Harris is a writer and a former journalist for the BBC. He examines the war on terror in this quote saying it is unwinnable and it is just human nature for people to terrorize and commit crimes. If this is true, the US government has been spending money and resources on a war that is unwinnable. But, this is just someone's opinion, right? The argument of the validity of the war on terror will be examined as well as how the US should cease funding for it because it is destroying the economics and society of the United States.

George W. Bush put actions into play known as the War On Terror to combat domestic terror and terror abroad but to get the funding for it he needed to cut funding from programs that the citizens need. Years later, many domestic programs still have their fundings cut to put money into the war on terror. In a Times article from 2005, Matthew Cooper and Massimo Calabresi examine how he spent this money. “Bush aims to cut 635 million dollars from the Justice Department program, handing more money to the FBI and Homeland Security.” (Cooper and Calabresi 17). With these cuts to the Justice Department, the people of America will not be as safe. Sure the increase in funds to the war on terror is to keep the people safe but if they cut money from programs like the Justice Department, the people will be in danger from criminals which is counter productive. Bush also proposed a cut to one of the most important programs to the poor population: Medicaid. “Bush has proposed a hefty cut on Medicaid. As we spend more money on the war on terror, the government takes more away from domestic programs that we need to keep the society running smoothly. They have also been spying on the public, looking for terrorists but really just snooping on the people of America. The treatment of Muslim Americans has also worsened over the years as the war on terror continues. These topics are not only important to talk about but also to act upon. The people of America must vote to stop the war on terror and get out of the Middle East. They must also repeal the Patriot act so the Government gives back the freedom that the American people deserve. The Americans must also recognize and get rid of Islamophobia from our society to make sure they feel safe. In today’s society the word “terrorism” has gone global. We see this term on television, in magazines and even from other people speaking of it. In their essay “Controlling Irrational Fears After 9/11”, published in 2002, Clark R. Chapman and Alan W. Harris argue that the reaction of the American officials, people and the media after the attacks of 9/11 was completely irrational due to the simple fact of fear. Chapman and Harris jump right into dismembering the irrational argument, often experienced with relationships and our personal analysis. They express how this argument came about from the terrorist being able to succeed in “achieving one major goal, which was spreading fear” among the American people (Chapman & Harris, para.1). The supporters of the irrational reaction argument state that because “Americans unwittingly cooperated with the terrorist in achieving the major goal”, the result was a widespread of disrupted lives of the Americans and if this reaction had been more rational then there would have been “less disruption in the lives of our citizens” (Chapman & Harris, para. 1).
Discrimination Imagine being discriminated against anyplace you went, with glares from many and you haven’t done anything to receive those judgments. Muslim Americans in the U.S. have to deal with that discrimination every day post the events that happened on 9/11. Some take drastic measures, such as changing their birth name, in hopes that they can avoid being judged by others. Muslim teenager Alisha, told her story that while visiting Six Flags with her family, an American man yelled at her father with the racial comment, “F**k you Osama!” She would also get asked offensive questions, like if she hated Jews too.
As modern America has progressed, it has had many advancements. Those advancements in turn have only compounded the problems they were meant to solve by adding copious amounts of obstacles. Progressive movements in people’s rights have been met with opposition, the country has become scared due to terrorist threats and local attacks such as: bombings and shootings, and now America is worried about the future. America’s zeitgeist is easily offended, frightened, and concerned.

Obama’s efforts on the National security regarding ISIS and other terrorist groups have people doubting his qualifications as president (Roff, ). Citizens believe that the president is not taking enough actions to defeat these terrorists. Only thirty-four percent agree with Obama’s way of handling extremist groups and forty percent believe that America’s top priority is national security and terrorism (Roff, ). Over time, attitudes toward Islam were growing more hostile. Today, the support for torture is stronger and counter-terror policies became worse. The strength of the term Muslim-looking grew more powerful. Political parties strive to keep Muslim-looking Americans safe from their own neighbors. Even though over time national identity has become more respectful and tolerate other religious beliefs, the American Creed still hold the values that they want to preserve at the up most high. They will not change their values, instead they will change their values, which in turn changes what it means to be an American.
Medicare and Medicaid together "are the single biggest contributor to [the United States] long term [budget] deficit." This idea was expressed by President Obama during his 2011 state of the Union Speech. After saying this, the president said that health care costs need to be reduced, including these two services. Medicare and Medicaid are beneficial to those who receive their services, and the criteria for eligibility currently allow many to qualify for either program. This is most likely the cause of the major deficit that the president spoke of. However, downsizing or eliminating these programs to lessen the deficit will affect many people and their ability to receive healthcare.
9/11 was one of the darkest days in America, but some say the government could have been part of these attacks. For many years people have debated about the 9/11 cover up. This theory cannot explain why the government would do this. Once people understand why the 9/11 cover up is fake, they will begin to see the answer to their problem, could the government have done this? This conspiracy theory is wrong because, terrorists admitted to the attacks, so many people died, and there's no evidence against the government.
Michael Walzer is an esteemed retired professor from the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. Walzer has written many books, essays, and articles. His essay, Excusing Terror, is one that best relates to the current events happening around the world.
