Robert Frost
Robert Forst was perhaps one of the most popular and beloved of twentieth century American poets. In many ways his work is related to nature and his New England surroundings. To Frost, Nature is a source of wisdom as well as a source of joy. He was born in San Fransisco, and moved to massachusetts at age 11. He later attended Dartmouth, and Harvard, both of which he dropped out of. Once he married, he lived on a thirty-acre farm with orchards, fields, pastured, woodlands, and springs. Farming always produced enough food for his family but they never had enough money. Robert lived here for around twelve years. At age 39 he moved to England where he published a collection of his poems for the first time. THese poemswere essentially based on his surroundings. He had written these poems in rural isolation on his farm in Massachusetts, and until published, were only read by his wife. For frost, nature is the source of all values. Nearly every poem he wrote is filled with a sense of nature's reality: her beauty, her threat, and the meaning she has to man. You can almost definitely find a refrence to nature in anyone of Frost's poems. Frost did it all, poems about snowy evenings, beautiful springs days, and even the relationship between a tree and a man in his poem, "Tree at My Window". Robert Frost had decided on a life of poetry early in his life. His mother had introduced him to it at a young age and he had loved it ever since. Poetry was his passion. Although his ambitions were strong, he did not recieve fame or an adequate amount of criticism after his first book was published. It took Frost longer to be recognized for his poetry than it did for him to publish a book. Frost was popular among readers but not with critics. In many of his poems, Frost used the poetic device of personification. This is a technique of humanizing inanimate objects. Personification gave Frost the ability to be more free with what he wrote. It made his poetry more effective and more enjoyable to read. Another technique Frost used was the dramatic technique of dialouge. This also improves the effectiveness of his poems, since people come to life when they speak their own words.
Robert Lee Frost was born on March 26, 1874 in San Francisco. When his father died, he moved to Massachusetts with his family to be closer to his grandparents. He loved to stay active through sports and activities such as trapping animals and climbing trees. He married his co- valedictorian, Elinor Miriam White, in 1895. He dropped out of both Dartmouth and Harvard in his lifetime. Robert and Elinor settled on a farm in Massachusetts, which his grandfather bought him. It was one of the many farms on which he would live in throughout his lifetime. Frost spent the next 9 years writing poetry while poultry farming. When poultry farming did not work out, he went back to teaching English. He moved to England in 1912 and became friends with many people who were also in the writing business. Edgar Allen Poe was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts. His mother and father where both actors, David and Elizabeth Arnold. They had financial difficulties, which soon caused the father to abandon the family. Poe's mother soon had another child; however, she was having physical conditions causing her death on December 8, 1811. Becoming orphans, both Poe and his sister were split up in family friend’s houses. Poe went to live with the Allan's. As Poe grew up he started having problems with his John Allan, his foster father, which caused future problems. Poe's first step to start a career was attending the University of Virginia in 1826. "Allan failed to provide Poe with enough money for necessities such as furniture and books and Poe soon ran up a tremendous gambling debt and began drinking, despite his very low tolerance for alcohol" (Loveday 2). After a time he moved to Boston, "The Great Literature Capital." What was helping Poe start of his career, where the big hopes of one day becoming a writer despite the harsh life he had since he was little. Poe's work has had an impact on literature. Throughout his most famous pieces of literature, "The Fall of the House of Usher," "The Raven," and "The Cast of Amontillado," we see common factors that influenced these types of works through his plots and characters. "Madness, alienation, and mankind's long love affair with morbidity were the his subjects, and he didn't mind admitting to being more to being more than half in love with easeful death, to mangle a line from his favorite poet, Tennyson," (Allen 2).

Poe may, perchance, have been named after a character in the play that his parents were performing that year. He was never formally adopted, however, Edgar Poe was renamed Edgar Allan Poe when the John Allan family took him in after his mother deceased and his father forsook the family. Robert Frost wrote poetry about nature and it is that nature that he used as symbols for life lessons. Many critics have been fascinated by the way that Frost could get so many meanings of life out of nature itself. In the poem “The Most of It,” Robert Frost uses a wealth of strong imagery to tell a story of a person who has lost his loved one to death and has to suffer the feeling of loneliness and emptiness created by it. Frost uses the setting of a lake surrounded by a forest to convey a feeling of peace and of being alone to the reader. A man is sitting on the edge of the lake, crying out for someone, his echo being his only company. After time, a buck swam across the lake and appeared on the shore and abruptly runs into the brush, away from sight. Although the man only caught a glimpse of the deer for a short moment, it was long enough for him to feel that he was no longer alone, but had something there, even though it was not tangible. The clues given to the reader that someone has passed on are the words “wake” and three lines down, the word “morning.” A wake can be many things; one is that it is a vigil that is held in honor of a person who has recently died.
Robert Frost and his wife decided in 1912 to sell their farm house in New Hampshire and move to England, where Frost wrote his first two books of poems. Frost was originally from San Francisco where he grew up and spent most of his childhood. Although a lot of his writing have natural parts in them, Frost doesn’t consider himself as a nature poet. “I’ve only written two poems without people in ‘em. Does that make me a nature poet? Most successful poems that are great, are great because they are personal to the author. He or she can’t write poetry if it doesn 't have something to do with them. This is why Frost’s poetry is meaningful, he puts in things that he knows and then puts in hidden meanings that makes the poem worth reading. Urbanity has a lot of different meanings that can be applied to real life. Frost takes this into account when he is writing poetry. Nature is an important theme in every frost poem. Nature usually symbolizes age or other things throughout Frost’s poems. In lines 5-10 it says, “Often you must have seen them loaded with ice a sunny winter morning after a rain. They click upon themselves as the breeze rises, and turn many-colored as the stir cracks and crazes their enamel. Soon the sun’s warmth makes them shed crystal shells.” This demonstrates how nature can sometimes symbolize something. Also in lines 29-33 it says, “ By riding them down over and over again until he took the stiffness out of them, and not one but hung limp, not one was left for him to conquer. He learned all there was to learn about not launching too soon.” In lines 44-48 it says, And life is too much like a pathless wood where your face burns and tickles with the cobwebs broken across it, and one eye is weeping from a twig’s having lashed across it open.
