He was born on November 20, 1965 in Brookline, Massachusetts and died from being assassinated on June 5, 1968 in Los Angeles, California. He was the Senator of New York from 1965 until 1968 when he was assassinated. He was the leading candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination. His brother was John F. Kennedy, who was the President of the United States, until he too was assassinated on November 22, 1963. The assassination of Robert F. Kennedy took place after midnight on June 5, 1968. Kennedy was a huge and shocking deal, especially since it came just nearly three years after his brother was assassinated. The situation was the presidential primary election was held in California on Tuesday, June 4, 1968. A few hours after the poll closed, Kennedy claimed victory over McCarthy in the Democratic presidential primary. Kennedy did not have secret service, because the government did not provide secret service to presidential candidates at the time. Kennedy did have security, just not the high-class security that presidents had. His security led Kennedy through a different way then usual and as Kennedy was walking through areas, he was shaking hands talking to people he passed. Sirhan Sirhan, then took out a .22 caliber Iver-Johnson Cadet revolver and shot Kennedy. At first one of the security guards did not think it would be that bad, but then he saw a whole in Kennedy’s head and knew it would not be good after that. He was not dead right away though, ad he was speaking words as he was lying on the ground. His last words before dying was “Don’t lift me.” He was referring to the medical staff lifting him on the stretcher into an ambulance. The doctors determined that he was shot three times, and twenty-six hours after the shooting, Kennedy was pronounced dead, at 1:44 AM PDT on June 6, 1968. Shortly after, Kennedy’s spokesman Frank Mankiewicz composed himself and made a speech to the media on how Kennedy was pronounced dead. Sirhan Sirhan, the man who assassinated Kennedy wrote in a diary of how he was obsessed with killing RFK, and how he must die. Sirhan’s lawyer’s however claimed that he was framed and had no memory of the crime. The thing that came out of Kennedy’s assassination was Media coverage. The ABC News coverage was just ending while Kennedy was getting shot and CBS coverage had already ended.
