For the past few years, living legend Robert De Niro has veered away from the type of dramatic roles that made him the Hollywood icon he is today. Instead, De Niro – who has absolutely earned the right to do whatever he wants – has lent his talents almost exclusively to the comedy genre. With roles in such films as The Big Wedding, Last Vegas, and Grudge match, it’s blatantly obvious De Niro is continuing to broaden the spectrum – likely stemming from the successes from the Meet the Parents series. And, although the vast majority of us don’t necessarily equate De Niro with comedy – he certainly has a knack for making even the most superfluous roles enjoyable. Jules can be tough to interact with – given her driven nature and busy work schedule. Still, Ben is persistent and eventually wins Jules over – becoming her everyday driver, close confidant, and friend. At the same time, Jules’s company is growing at and expediential rate – forcing her to look for an outside CEO that has experience with managing and growing a company. Coincidentally, Jules is also having problems with her husband, Matt (Anders Holm), who gave up his career to be a stay-at-home dad. Within the first few opening moments of this film, the joyful good nature of this story hits you in the face like a ton of bricks. The Intern radiates positivity and demonstrates a relentless exuberance that sends a resounding message that age isn’t everything – and it certainly doesn’t hinder one’s devotion to a cause. He’s punctual to work, loyal, friendly, and in no way allows his age (or lack of experience in the technical department) to hinder his ability to learn. Everyone loves him, and when someone has as much love for life and experience, why shouldn’t you? De Niro’s co-star, Anne Hathaway, delves into an entirely different character, altogether – giving viewers a reasonable view through the looking glass of what it’s like to be the head of an upstart company. There aren’t enough hours in the day for Jules Ostin to accomplish everything that comes across her desk, yet Hathaway rarely has a hair out of place, let alone bags under the eyes (like most people in her position would). Still, Hathaway – who hasn’t been overly active on the big screen as of late (since her dominant reign in 2012) – is the perfect selection to portray Jules, especially since the life of an A-list Hollywood celebrity is somewhat comparable to a sleep deprived CEO.
