Introduction
The industry that had been chosen to be discussed within this manuscript is the Oil Refinery. Since oil industry plays a vital function as the principal key resource for the fuel production within the economy of the world. While, the oil necessity continues to control the energy sector of the world, in addition it might require decades earlier than an innovative infrastructure for transportation, alternative energy supply distribution, and production is applied universally. Actually, the high prices of oil haven’t been the single purpose for great investments within the industry of oil refining. The regulatory variations of safety and environmental have strained this sector in purpose of enhancement certain processes of refinery to reduce those associated impacts of human and environment with the consumption of oil products alongside to the refinery operation. Thus, it is vital to discuss such kind of industry that produce fundamental products such as fuels, waxes, chemicals products, lubricating oils, plastics, beside several alternative products through refining the crude oil, to the society and at the same time that impacts the human and environment.
Goals and objectives
Perform a risk assessment and risk management approach in workplace for those hazards emitted via the industry of oil refinery. This assessment tends to discover all possible risks associated with such industry and suggest alongside finding out ways to mitigate those risks. Especially, the workers exposed to several hazards with several high intensity, frequency and concentration of chemical’s emissions and radiations.
Literature review
The information those had been used for the assessment are gathered from several resources such as ...

...r even be near of it. Knowing that such hazards exist, a risk assessment is crucial to be carried out to know what kind of risks a refinery would face. There are different types of risk assessments depending on the nature of the place and for a refinery a comparative risk assessment was done as it includes of chemical, radiological and occupational risks. The risk assessment will then show if mitigating or preventing systems and controls are in place to avoid accidents. This will be taken care of through risk management, in which managers and executives will make decisions whether extra controls or systems should be developed and utilized for maintaining the safety of the people and the environment. After the risk assessment that was carried out for an oil refinery, this assessment included a risk management applying all control measures required for such hazards.
Besides the accidental spillage affecting severe damage to the environment and then causing harm to humans, there are direct impacts on human health from oil. Problems suc...
The risks of most oil refineries tend to be similar, there are fire/explosion risks which are caused by the inability to contain flammable liquids or gases that are usually at high temperatures and pressures. There are also risks of some toxic leakage, as components come into contact with compounds used in the process.
In one of the largest oil refineries in Texas City, on March 23, 2005, the explosion and fire took place, which took away 15 lives, injured over 170 people, and obligated thousands residents that lived close to the plant to stay in their homes. BP generates diesel and jet fuel, and gasoline. In 2005 a huge cloud filled with hydrocarbon ignited approximately 1:20 pm. The explosion caused solid harm to the plant and to its name. In fact, the company had couple not so serious accidents before the explosion, and there were none engineering problems addressed by the management of the company. Because of a cost-saving plan, the maintenance and safety was paid less attention that needed in order to avoid the disaster at the plant. For sure, all the responsibility of the accident should be blamed on executives in London that were aware of the safety issues and budget cuts. It was definitely strong mismana...
Avoiding or reducing the risk, need to go through a process of analysis to determinate the right path to integrate it as a driver of the management about health and safety issues for their workforce.
Throughout the risk assessment process, ideas for action were identified and documented. The documentation of these ideas led to the development of potential action item worksheets which were then selected, prioritized, and refined. Detailed risk assessment information for each hazard is included and located through this document.
· The results of the assessment of the work performed by the department including the review of work programs and documentation of procedures.
Risk management is a process used in all industries to reduce the risk. The Risk management tool usage changes from sector to sector and hence each sector has developed their own risk management tools and methodologies to mitigate the risk. But the concept remains the same behind all the tools (Ropel, 2011). The main steps for risk management irrespective of the sector are:
Oil is one of the fuels and commodity that is important when demands towards it increasing. Most of the countries in this world their economy depend on oil for example 79.5% rough economies of Nigeria come from this fuel resources. With area about 1000 km2, Ogoniland that located in Nigeria is a site that had processed oil since year 1950. However, there had happened a tragic history fire where oil wells and oil spill ever happened and tarnish area. Attributed to lack of information what had caused the incident happen, UNEP had conducted a study to know level oil pollution in Ogoniland. This report will cover land area that had been contaminated, surface water, plant, ground water, air pollution, industry practice and public health. It will give full picture on this pollution that is closely related to human health and environment. Study on oil pollution on environment and Ogoniland people's health is the most complex has been carried out by UNEP. In this group consisting of international experts to their respective areas like water, touchdown, forest, public health and polluted land. Experts will be cooperating with those who are involved in academic section, local expert and public members. Among study that was carried out is like revisit scene oil spill, oil well, including all facilities used or had been abandoned and explore 122 km pipeline in that area. This observation based on information provided by government guard care, Shell Petroleum Development Company (Nigeria) Ltd and the public members whether within or outside Ogoniland population. Much information has obtained on oil spill with Ogoniland cooperation residents and oil spill official data by Nigerian government and Shell Petroleum Development Company (Nigeria) Lt...
Risk assessment – The company must also pay attention to risk assessment and not just focus solely on following a set of rules. A risk assessment will provide a more enhanced view of the compliance obligations and helps the organisation to prioritise. This is also a crucial element in terms of due diligence.
The industry is divided into three distinct sectors including the upstream, midstream and downstream sectors. The upstream sector includes the exploration and production of crude oil as well as the exploration and production of natural gas. This sector has experienced the largest amount of deals in terms of mergers and acquisitions, which will be further discuss in section III. The midstream sector involves the transportation of extracted petroleum from the upstream sector through pipelines, rail, barge, truck as well as storage. Finally, the downstream sector connects the end consumers through derived products such as gasoline, liquefied natural gas (LPG), liquefied natural gas (LNG), kerosene (aircrafts), and diesel…
The importance of oil to the modern world is unique in character and far-reaching in scope. It is a singularly autonomous variable in the world economy and it is used inter alia for transportation, heating and production.
Now a day rapid industrialization is increase all over the world and industrialization and vehicles spilling of oil pipelines are contributing to increase the pollution in nearby environment because of this they will contaminated the lands and water because of oil spilling we will lose agricultural lands and productivity of soil. if it is spill in water it is not recover very early so its dangerous for human and aquatic life.
A hazard is defined as an activity or object that has the potential to cause harm if contact is made with the person, object or activity (MHS, 1996; Harmse, 2007; HSE, 2006). These hazards in a work place need to be identified and dealt with accordingly to prevent any harm to employees or any individual acquainted to a certain activity or establishment. The key roles and principles of occupational hygiene are Anticipation, Identification, Evaluation and Control (Schoeman and van den Heever, 2014; Harmse, 2008; SAMTRAC, 2012). To practise in accordance to the above principle; a hazard identification and risk assessment needs to be conducted. Anticipation is the foreseeing of the activity
As the first step, identify potential risks plays a crucial role in the risk management process. The core purpose of identifying risk is to figure out causes of risk and analyze result caused by the risks and its probability . Hence, risk identification can begin with the source of problem, or with the problem itself. The chosen method of identifying risk may depend on culture, industry practice and compliance. The identification
A hazard is a potential damage, adverse health or harm that may effects something or someone at any conditions. Other than that, the risk may be high or low, that somebody could be harmed depending on the hazards. Risk assessment is a practice that helps to improve higher quality of the develop process and manufacturing process. It is also a step to examine the failure modes of the product in order to achieve higher standard of safety and product reliability. Unfortunately, it is common that a product safety risk assessments are not undertaken, or not carried out effectively by manufacturer. Mostly an unsafe and unreliable product was produced and launched on to the market. Thus, the safety problems are mostly identified after an accident happened or after manufacturing problems arisen. In order to prevent risk, a person should take enough precautions or should do more to prevent them because as a user should be protected from harm that usually caused by a failure for whom did not take reasonable control measures.
