The mafia originally started in Sicily, Italy more than 100 years ago. Mafia is defined as a secret criminal society/organization/syndicate which is known for its intimidation and involvement in organized crime. Immigration of Italian Mafia to the US all started from the moment when Benito Mussolini came to power in 1922. Mussolini viewed the mafia as a possible threat to his Fascist party. Later that year he launched a brutal operation during which more than 1,000 Mafiosi were convicted and thrown in jail. Some of the higher ranked Mafiosi escaped to the United States and that was the beginning of the US Mafia as we know it today. It all started with the Tennessee senator Estes Kefauver who launched first investigation into organized crime. It was the first time when the US government publicly recognized the existence of the American Mafia. But because of a lack of evidence FBI and the congress failed to take any actions against the Mafia. Not many years after FBI carried a raid in a small town of a gathering of more than 60 mobsters from across the country. That was one of the red flags for the US government saying that they cannot any longer ignore the Mafia’s existence. In the early 1960’s, US Attorney Robert Kennedy was the next government official who was pressure the US government to fight organized crime and corruption on labor unions. Most of Kennedy’s attention was focused on FBI’s director J. Edgar Hoover to pressure him to increase his efforts on pursuing the mafia. As the result the FBI started an electronic spying program that provided FBI with a lot of valuable information. In 1963 FBI got a chance to learn about the mafia as much as they can, when former mobster Joseph Valachi broke the mafia’s code of silence and started cooperating with the FBI. From that moment the government began winning the war against the Mafia.
