Every year, around the first week of August, right when summer is about to end and the beginning of the summer monsoons, people gather in Farmington, New Mexico at a ballpark known as Ricketts Park. A baseball park located about a quarter of a mile off of main street, down a street that on the right side is a building with its trademark cow and chicken on the roof, known as the Spare Rib BBQ. Then, as you continue to go down the street, on the left side there should be a big, dark brown building, which is the Recreation center, and beside the Recreation center is the ballpark. You’ll know the ballpark because it has six big baseballs in front of the ticket booth along with a life size bronze statue of a catcher in the middle. Plus, the new …show more content…
Immediately following, nine innings of baseball, with hardly any errors, continue to play throughout the day and into the evening. With the nice soft” Bang” of the bat making contact with line drives and the deep “Thud” of baseballs being caught in a glove. In the distance, the “crack” of windows being shattered are heard from the fouls balls that escape from the field of play. At last, the night game, which includes the well known navy blue and red with gold trimming jerseys, the host team, brings even more of the locals to pack in the stadium, like a can of sardines, leaving many to stand in open areas with their arms folded over each other. As they go through the line-up, people chant “Hey batter batter”, or “Here we go Strikezone, here we go”, all throughout the game. Afterwards, following a good win, people exit the stadium heading back to their vehicles, talking amongst each other about the game that they have just witnessed. A few of the spectators find that their windshields are damaged and are seen complaining, like what most couples do, to one another about why they should not have parked so close to the game. Nevertheless, it has only been the first day of play with lots more to come, including the

I’ve been a student-athlete at the University of Arizona for two years. In this short span I have attended many sporting events on campus. I often wear the red, white, and blue colors for nearly all the men’s sports that exist at Arizona, ranging from men’s basketball to men’s swimming. Yet, I have never attended a women’s softball game at the university. In fact it’s important to know that I have never attended any women’s softball games before. I had seen plenty of baseball games in my life, but never a softball game. This all changed on Friday April 4th. As soon as I finished football practice a few teammates and I headed over to the softball field. On this particular evening Arizona was up against the Cardinal of Stanford. When we arrived a Stanford player was at the plate and an Arizona pitcher was preparing to wind up for a throw. As I sat down and took in my surroundings something become blatantly oblivious to me. Unlike baseball the pitcher was not on a mound, rather the pitcher appeared to be in a flat circle. This was interesting and I pondered why there was no mound. Was it...

I felt as though I was watching a train barrelling towards me, an inevitable bullet that had come tumbling out of the opposing pitcher’s arm. But instead I stood immobilized, watching my team's only chance of winning whiz by me. Strike three. I heard my team from behind me shouting “SWING!” with my mind screaming the same. But my bat remained unmoving, the pop of the catcher's glove like the nail into the coffin that was our defeat. All I had to do to keep our hopes of winning hope alive was swing, and yet I couldn't. I stayed on the field afterwards, tossing the ball up in the air and swinging away, landing it on the thick maple barrel of the bat.
