Richard Rodgers was born on June 28, 1902. He started playing piano at the age of 6 and attended P.S. 10, Townsend Harris Hall, and DeWitt Clinton High School. He went to Columbia University, and then changed his mind and went to the Institute of Musical Art. Better known today as Juilliard. In 1919, he met Lorenz Hart, and the two of them starting writing musicals. They wrote many shows in the beginning but as far as I can tell, they were not very popular. Until they went out to try new things, it is said though that Richard Rodgers later regretted this. At the time, they wrote some classic songs and then went back to Broadway and wrote hit show after hit show. He started into the theatre when he made his first debut in a Christmas Pageant at his school and at 9 he began taking piano classes. His life took a turn at 15 when his mother died. When he had to choose a career his dad pushed him to go to law school and not pursue theatre, which is what he did. He took classes at Columbia University. But when his dad died in 1914, he became more dependent on the theatrically inclined members of his family. Thus, at Columbia University, Oscar’s career in theatre began. He started performing in plays with the Columbia University Players as a performer and later as a writer, and it was there that he met Richard Rodgers. He got a position as an assistant stage manager. He worked his way through all the jobs he could work there and eventually start writing musical comedies of his own. He partnered up with Rodgers and together the created many memorable musicals. Oscar Hammerstein died in Doylestown, Pennsylvania on August 23. 1960. He had left behind three children, and on September 1, 1960, at 9 p.m the lights on Broadway were extinguished in his memory. He is remembered as the “man who owned
