The 450 pound Bengal Tiger, also known as "Richard Parker", has been Pi's companion throughout his survival journey. Richard Parker's name also plays a major significance to the story. The major theme that his name is intertwined with his the will to survive and the nature of religious belief. The origin of his name is represented by the will to survive. Richard Parker was said to have gained his name from a clerical error, which was mixed up with the hunter's name "Richard Parker"(Martel, pg.166). A hunter is trained since childhood to possess the ability to hunt for survival and protect their loved ones. The hunter acknowledges that if they do not possess the will to survive, they cannot proceed to their future. They must have hope and courage at all times. This could interpret that Richard Parker's original name, represented him as a figure of good, to keep Pi purified and to not lose his sanity. When Pi came across the French castaway, it was Richard Parker who brutally murdered the man before Pi fell into the shadows of evil (Martel, pg.321). This shows that Richard Parker as an individual guided Pi through his journey and kept him occupied from mentally losing himself towards evil. Just like a hunter, Richard Parker provides hope for Pi, which follows up with the will to survive. Pi states that he cannot live without Richard Parker (Martel, pg.207). Without a companion, Pi would most likely decide to commit suicide. Richard Parker gave Pi the will to survive and without the allusion of a companion, he probably would not have. From the roots of his name, Richard Parker represented Pi's will to survive throughout the novel.
