Richard Diebenkorn is an Abstract Expressionist American Painter (Kalfatovic). He grew fond of art at an early age. He once mentioned, “I drew and painted all through grammar school, for me the highlight of the day was when the paints came out” (Kalfatovic). His early work focuses on abstract art. Abstraction Expressionism main focus is emotional expression, it has no specific shape or form. Therefore, to some it is not always easily understood. After the 1950’s, Diebenkorn leaned more forward to a figurative style of abstract expressionism (Kalfatovic). His painting “Girl with a Flowered Background,” is an exquisite example of his figurative abstraction creation.
One of the many criteria that makes this particular painting unique is the placement of the objects. In other words, the composition. The black haired female figure is placed in the center as the main point focal point. The audience does not know the story of painting, but sees a figure of a female body. Instead, there are subtle hints of colors on her body. One of the few artist that inspired Diebenkorn was French artist Henri Matisse. Matisse is known for his funky use of colors to express, rather than focusing on typical natural colors to do so (Kleiner 837). Her forehead has mixtures of blue brush strokes. It is darker compare to some parts of her body. It gives the audience a sense of heaviness she carries in her mind. Other colors like yellow is used to highlight parts of her body. Her knees have hints of coral orange, aquamarine, red, and yellow. There is a higher concentration of color, than any other part of her body.
