In 2009 I wrote an essay Importance of Keeping Traditions for my Philosophy course where my audience was the professor and classmates. The requirements for the project were to be able to write an argumentative essay, to show a student’s point of view and his/her writing skills as well, to implement a good reasoning. In order to write a strong argumentative essay I had to follow requirements such as: structure it correctly and provide enough evidence to support my arguments. In the essay I argued about the importance of keeping traditions for immigrants and I assumed that it was suitable for philosophy class but now, by rereading and analyzing it I can see how the rhetorical choices I’ve made had a very negative effect on the whole paper because of that it failed. Knowing the audience, using reasonable language, and organizing it right would be the key for successful essay. Making statements and providing a counterargument for an essay is supposed to make it stronger but an incorrect choice of the source for quotations, examples, overuse personalization, and generalization makes it a complete failure.
The very first things that stand out from the essay are quotations and examples from The Kite Runner written by Khaled Hosseini and it was the biggest misconception I made in the essay. Those quotes and examples I provided in order to support the argument and make the essay more effective and stronger which I thought would appeal to the readers’ emotions. Just before writing my assignment for the philosophy class I read The Kite Runner for my English reading class and I was emotionally touched by the events described in that book so without realizing I used the quotes and examples from it. I assumed that it would be great for supp...

...ck of understanding the audience and its interest played a significant role in writing an unsuitable essay. Despite that, through this rhetorical analysis I was able to examine it thoroughly and see how it could be more effective. By making the essay more formal, eliminating hasty generalization, and providing more evidence to support the claim and make paragraph’s structure strong and reliable, the essay would be more productive. In addition, in order to write a good essay it is necessary for me to analyze my audience first so I would know what rhetorical choices to make. Not only do the choices matter but also choosing the right topic for particular audience in order to make them involved.

Jonathan Kozol revealed the early period’s situation of education in American schools in his article Savage Inequalities. It seems like during that period, the inequality existed everywhere and no one had the ability to change it; however, Kozol tried his best to turn around this situation and keep track of all he saw. In the article, he used rhetorical strategies effectively to describe what he saw in that situation, such as pathos, logos and ethos.
In the book Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer wrote about Christopher McCandless, a nature lover in search for independence, in a mysterious and hopeful experience. Even though Krakauer tells us McCandless was going to die from the beginning, he still gave him a chance for survival. As a reader I wanted McCandless to survive. In Into the Wild, Krakauer gave McCandless a unique perspective. He was a smart and unique person that wanted to be completely free from society. Krakauer included comments from people that said McCandless was crazy, and his death was his own mistake. However, Krakauer is able to make him seem like a brave person. The connections between other hikers and himself helped in the explanation of McCandless’s rational actions. Krakauer is able to make McCandless look like a normal person, but unique from this generation. In order for Krakauer to make Christopher McCandless not look like a crazy person, but a special person, I will analyze the persuading style that Krakauer used in Into the Wild that made us believe McCandless was a regular young adult.
Rhetorical Analysis Writers always write in different styles in order to attract readers. Every piece of writing has different types of rhetorical methods. For example, “If Technology Is Making Us Stupid, It’s Not Technology’s Fault,” there are different types of techniques used to appeal to writers. In parts of the essay it has logic which is known for using logos. The writer uses very strong emotions which is known as pathos.
Actions made in a moment of pain, anger or simple immaturity can take anyone to make mistakes that can change their lives completely. Everyone has something in the past that is shameful, embarrassing and regrettable that is kept present daily. Whether this event happened during childhood, adolescence or early adulthood, this event could haunt and have shaped that person’s life into what he or she is today. In a similar way, in the book The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini is shaped by a tragic and eventful past that has shaped Amir’s, Baba’s, and Hassan’s life. The four literary elements that will be used in this essay that Hosseini strategically uses in this book are: irony, simile, Metaphor, and personification.
discussed the rhetorical skills in the writing styles and analysis. The main components of this learning was to be able to differentiate and understand the ethos, logos, and pathos appeals associated with the particular feeling and help develop understanding. Using the ethos, logos, and pathos appeals the writers and speakers can convince their readers to some image or understanding regarding the group or association. Every one of us is associated with different discourse communities that have different specialties and meaning. Everyone must have to learn the ways the communities interact with their members and how the communities understand a person from outside the community. Being outside from the community there is need to learn regarding
The article I have chosen for my rhetorical analysis is #Gamergate Trolls Aren’t Ethics Crusaders; They’re a hate group because it seemed interesting. The reason I was drawn to this article was because of the title, I was interested to know what it meant. This article, written by Jennifer Allaway, is about gamergate, an online gaming community, and the hate they show towards others. Jennifer does research on sexism in videogames and how it correlates to the gamers that play these games. She was collecting data from different organizations by using a questionnaire that gathered information on diversity in the videogame community. When some gamergate members
The impact and effectiveness of using proper rhetoric was a strategy of “good” writing that I was not aware of until my senior year of high school. While taking AP Language and Composition my junior year, my fellow students and I believed that we had survived countless essay workshop activities and writing assignments with emphasis on word choices, grammatical structure, syntax, punctuation and spelling. By the time we had entered AP Literature our senior year, we felt we could achieve success; we already knew how to write in the correct format and structur...
Pollan’s article provides a solid base to the conversation, defining what to do in order to eat healthy. Holding this concept of eating healthy, Joe Pinsker in “Why So Many Rich Kids Come to Enjoy the Taste of Healthier Foods” enters into the conversation and questions the connection of difference in families’ income and how healthy children eat (129-132). He argues that how much families earn largely affect how healthy children eat — income is one of the most important factors preventing people from eating healthy (129-132). In his article, Pinsker utilizes a study done by Caitlin Daniel to illustrate that level of income does affect children’s diet (130). In Daniel’s research, among 75 Boston-area parents, those rich families value children’s healthy diet more than food wasted when children refused to accept those healthier but
In a quote by John Mill, “Does fining a criminal show want of respect for property, or imprisoning him, for personal freedom? Just as unreasonable is it to think that to take the life of a man who has taken that of another is to show want of regard for human life. We show, on the contrary, most emphatically our regard for it, by the adoption of a rule that he who violates that right in another forfeits it for himself, and that while no other crime that he can commit deprives him of his right to live, this shall.” Everyone’s life is precious, but at what price? Is it okay to let a murderer to do as they please? Reader, please take a moment and reflect on this issue. The issue will always be a conflict of beliefs and moral standards. The topic
The idea of rhetoric is exceptionally important in the world of writing, and just like memories, rhetoric is what a paper is forged out of. It helps the building of connections. The connection made to rhetoric in my writing is nearly oblivious, everything I write has been affected by rhetoric in some way. This rhetoric was very obvious in a paper I wrote in my sophomore year of English. Like every English paper I had written in high school, our class read a book, William Golding’s The Lord of the Flies, and were assigned a paper on said book. Unlike most papers in high school, which are mainly theme based, this paper was on character analysis. It was formatted in a way where we could have a critical and judgmental stance on the character we were
The rhetorical analysis played a role in this, because I was required to use the various rhetorical appeals to compose a strong argument. Using the appeals definitely helped in trying to persuade the reader to acknowledge the opposing view.
Rhetorical study is the art of describing reality through language. The study of rhetoric becomes an effort to understand how humans, in various capacities and in a variety of situations, can describe reality through language. The importance of rhetoric study is that, it is a good writing tool to have in academic study that can be used to persuade others. Using rhetoric has an impact on writing for composing essays. In the use of rhetoric writers and speakers should know how to use the three modes of appeal, and know the importance of certain issues when using rhetoric in their essays or speeches. Rhetoric is commonly used when arguing rhetorical topics to persuade or to inform others about certain issues.
The author’s main argument in “Rhetoric: Making Sense of Human Interaction and Meaning-Making” is that rhetoric does not need to be complicated if writers incorporate certain elements to their writing. Downs further analyzed the elements that contribute to rhetoric such as symbols and signals, motivation, emotion, ecology, reasoning and identification. The author emphasized that writers can learn how to deliver their writing effectively once they are more aware on how rhetoric works. Downs constantly assures that rhetoric is quite simple and does not need to provoke fuzziness. Even though the term rhetorical is applied to everything, the author of the article made it clear that the “rhetorical” thing is situated. The example provided by the author in this article, further guides our understanding on what rhetoric

The author begins his argument by retelling the story of his youth to build his ethos but the results are poor as it presents more questions on how he is a credible source on this argument as his only evidence is his own story. However, through the same means his pathos is built as his anecdote conveys feelings in the audience, making them more willing to listen. Graff finally, gives a call to action to schools to use students’ interests to develop their skills in rhetoric and analysis, which reveals the logic behind his argument. The topic about how students are taught rhetoric and analysis brings interest but with an average argument only built on pathos, a low amount of logos, and questionable ethos it can fall on deaf
