During the Revolutionary War, the first cavalry was established. For example in 1775, Paul Revere rode his horse through the night to alert the American settlers the British army was coming. The cavalry consisted of men who rode horses. The advantage of using the cavalry is that they could cover more miles, in a shorter period of time. The horses were not always treated with the best of care. The cavalry had several impacts on past wars.
The cavalry was used in many wars in the past. One of the first wars that the cavalry was used in was the Revolutionary War when the American settlers and the British went to war with each other (Carney 1). So after awhile technology had improved and the use of the cavalry was decreased little by little. Jeeps, helicopters and planes were being made and improved which took over the spot of the cavalry. The effect of this is that even though those horses can cover more miles than a footed soldier, these jeeps and planes and helicopter cover 10x more land. The improvement of technology wiped out most of the cavalry units and the soldiers were all transported and trained to use the planes, jeep, and helicopter like in the Vietnam War. Now horses are just used in parades and other things like horse shows or horse racing. Even though that technology had been improved the horses should not of been taken out of the military because they are not as strong and tanks trucks and planes but the footed soldiers should not have to walk while people in vehicles get there faster. It isn’t always easy to get the vehicles in small areas but horses can so they should of kept some of the cavalry

The horse made all aspects of Native American life easier, including traveling, hunting, raiding, and waging war. The more convenient life did not come without a price, however. The horse created a competition for resources in the region, but the greatest price was allowing a greater level of violence to enter the plains. During the Renaissance there was debate on whether infantry or cavalry was superior. In the midst of the debate Niccolo Machiavelli, a Florentine, argued that infantry were more appropriate in military campaigns than cavalry. In the year 1521, Machiavelli penned a military strategy book, “The Art of War,” that would change the course of modern warfare. In his book, Machiavelli contended that infantry was the superior military force when maneuverability and flexibility were critical. The psychology of horses demonstrated clearly why horses should not be used in engagements.
Fort pillow massacre was one of the most controversial battles of the civil war. This battle was a gateway to the eventual fair treatment towards blacks. Although it was a controversial battle it helped unify the country by the end of the war. This massacre gave federalists more of a reason to fight and also gave confederates more reason to defend themselves.
The Civil War is one of the defining wars in the history of this great nation. The Battle of Gettysburg was the bloodiest battle in American history, and a turning point in the four year war. At the time, Gettysburg was a small, quiet town generally unaffected by the war. General Robert E. Lee of the Confederate States of America and General George Meade of the Union converged in Gettysburg, and a conflict quickly arose. After three long days of battle the Union pulled away with a victory, though not an easy one. For my extra credit assignment, I visited the Stones River National Battlefield, established on March 3, 1927, in Murfreesboro,Tennessee. I chose this site because of its significant importance during the Civil War. It is the site of one of the largest national battles between Union forces and Confederate forces. The battle resulted in one of the largest losses of life during the Civil War. The geography of the site itself is significant in that it was center to the river and to the rail lines. The surrounding farmland was imperative to the Confederate soldiers as their source of food during the war. The War Hawks demanded a more aggressive policy toward the British after the Battle of Tippecanoe because they argued that by letting fleeing Native Americans seek refuge within Canada’s border, the British were conspiring against the U.S. with the Native Americans as their allies. As a result of the Battle of Tippecanoe, many Native Americans, driven from their camp in Prophetstown with their confidence in Tecumseh and the confederacy destroyed, fled to safety in Canada. Since the British owned Canada at this time, some Americans saw this as a threat from the British because they thought the British were not only supplying the Native Americans with a safe haven, but arming them too. One of the most famous battles at this time period was the battle of Lexington and Concord in 1775. This battle is known for its famous ,"shoot heard around the world". It was the first battle starting off the war as hundreds of British troops marched into Concord firing at the American militia, or minutemen. The next key battle was the battle of Saratoga in 1777. This was the turning point in the war because the france became our allies. Helping to give the Americans the advantage over the British. Then this one, not major battle, happened but had just as big as effect as the rest of the battles. This was the attack at Valley Forge. It was an American base, it was temporally abandoned do to the harsh winter. When the British troops saw this fort, they decided to take it. When the Americans tried to come and take it back they failed loosing 25% of their troops. This wasn't a huge battle but was more of a awakening call for the Americans. The last major battle of the Revolutionary War was the battle of Yorktown. The American militia pushed the British back to the water at Yorktown forcing them to retreat. As the Americans pushed them to the waters the French navy blocked off their retreat, forcing them to die or surrender. This battled really ended the war, though smaller battles still
The invention of the powerful artillery guns would change man’s role in warring engagements. The artillery guns at first were very limited by their own design. The guns were very heavy and had to be transported by water, which meant that only towns and fortresses that were close to a body of water could be attacked with artillery also known as the cannon. There were also some fortresses that were impervious to the early cannon attacks based on strong designs or natural defenses. The French were able to penetrate the round shaped castles and large walls during the late 1400s by using concentrated fire of several small guns instead of a few large ones.
In the 17th century, before the Seven Years’ War, the common soldier was just an unpaid citizen who fought for the local militia with his own weapon, but the Seven Years’ War totally changed in military system. The Seven Years’ War was very significant because it forced all of the European countries to focus less on commerce and more territory. This new shift in focus is what caused Britain to send so many more troops to America; the British politicians believed it was vital to militarize their colonies like America, West Africa, and Asia. Long distance weapons were essential to European combat. The main long distance weapons used by Europeans during that time were the longbow and the crossbow. Each form of weaponry had its unique advantages and their pejorative. The long bow (shown in figure 1) was the original form of distance weapons. The term ‘bow’ means to be made from wood, iron or steel. The Welsh, who inhabited England, were the first people to use longbows. Longbows were 6-7 feet long and had a range of 250 yards, and still had the ability to pierce a knight’s armor (Byam 12). A well trained archer could shot 10- 12 arrows in a single minute. Despite these pro’s the longbow had a lot of disadvantages as well. One draw back was only skilled archers, who were costly to train, could use a longbow. Another disadvantage was it didn’t have a ready loaded arrow (Edge 34). The crossbow (shown in figure 2) on the other had been emphatically different. The crossbow had a span of 2-3 feet and could kill a knight on horseback with one shot, because of good aim (Byam 30). Crossbows had ready loaded projectiles, while the longbow didn’t and the crossbow could be used by anyone since it didn’t require any skill. Gunpowder and the invention of the cannon meant the end of primeval warfare. These inventions marked the end of the use of knights and the siege. Once the cannon was invented in the early fourteenth century, by the German monk Berthold Schwarz , knights and city walls didn't stand a chance. If the enemy went into a siege, all the general had to do was bring in their cannons, and blast a hole in the wall allowing his men to get through. Then the victory went to the best trained army. The primative version, was rather large and heavy, but the tube projected rocks and other objects which could easily render a knight, or a city wall helpless, and at the mercy of the army. These developments truly marked the end of the primative warfare.
The First World War introduced a new type of warfare. New weapons were combined with old strategies and tactics. Needless to say, the results were horrific. However, a new type of warfare was introduced: trench warfare. In the movie War Horse, the character that owned the horse originally while he worked on his farm, Albert Narracott, finally was old enough to join the army. His first sight of battle was the Battle of Somme which took place in France near the Somme River. During this battle, the British troops start out in trenches, which were pretty much tunnels dug strategically to avoid gunfire. The soldiers would wait until they were told to advance, and they would run from one trench to the next. Today, using horses for transportation has declined, however leisure and rehabilitative activities have increased. To understand horseback riding, it is essential to look at the history of equines, the sport of horseback riding, and how to take care of a horse.
