First of all, Porourangi 's wife is pregnant and he is in the hospital with he’s friends waiting his new son to be born. The surgery is done the doctor is coming and the news is not what all people wanted. The only one who make it is the girl and her mother and her twin brother couldn’t make it. The grandpa and the grandma came and they already know what is happening. The grandpa “Koro” wants a baby to be a new leader to his town. He is not happy and doesn’t know what to do. Because of the deaths of his son and wife, Porourangi leaves the country and the girl is taken by the grandparents. The girl is growing up with the grandpa and she becoming more aware of everything around her. She is learning leasons in life from her grandpa and she becoming …show more content…

The pictures of whale in the see always come to her mind and she knows that something will happen. The grandpa loves her but due to pride and tradition he can not let her be the leader. The grandpa starts to train the young people in the country and to see who is the best and deserves to be the leader. He tests them and when the final test comes they all fails. The girl takes lessons from her uncle Rawiri to be better than the boys and to convince her grandpa. She wants to take the final test and she pass it. The grandma and the uncle they both believe in her and they want her to be the leader but, the grandpa doesn’t because the gender rules. Later on, all the whales on the beach and they all going to die. All the family and the neighbors are trying to help them but, they couldn’t do anything. The grandma comes and say I want this girl and I want to raise this girl. Paikea’s father leaves the country because he feels so much bad after the deaths of his waif and the twin son. Later on, the girl is growing up and she starting to know more about the life. The grandparents are taking care of the girl and they raising her well. Koro is teaching her everything about life and he is the only one who takes her to the school everyday. She spend more hours with her grandpa that with anyone else. They are very close to each other and everyone knows that. The grandpa loves her although he wants a son instead of a girl because of the rules in the country. He wants a boy to be the leader and the rules says no girl can be the leader. She is not happy about the rules and she want to be something to her family and prove to them that her birth was not a bad thing. Her father just comes back from Germany and she is happy to meet him but, the grandpa is still not happy about his son because he left after his daughter was born. Koro is still wants his son to marry and to bring a son to the family. He finds the woman from Paikea 's school but Porourangi says he is married to a girl from Germany and she is pregnant and he expecting a son.
