On Thursday November 19, 2013 the UNG Singers and Le Belle Voci presented their Fall Concert under the direction of Dr. John M. Broman with accompanist Mrs. Mary Beth Hutcheson. This was their second performance of the week and it took place at the Dahlonega United Methodist Church in Dahlonega, Georgia at eight o’clock pm. The concert presented many pieces sung by either the UNG singers or Le Belle Voci. However each group had one piece and composer that they mainly focused on. Presenting them with as much passion and feeling as they could. The UNG singers chose Gloria by the French composer Francis Poulenc and LE Belle Voci chose a piece by the composer Benjamin Britten entitled A Ceremony of Carols.
The first piece to be presented was Francis Poulenc’s Gloria sung by the UNG singers. Director Dr. John Broman referred to it as, “one of the most rigorous pieces [they’d] ever done”. The UNG singers actually presented Gloria with an added addition by UNG’s very own Dr. Lee Barrow. Dr. Barrow has been working with the French publishing agency, Editions Salabert of Paris, to prepare a new corrected edition. In the program lots of background information was proved to the audience on both Francis Poulenc and Gloria. Francis Poulenc was one of the most prominent French composers of the twentieth century. He was also one of the most prolific writers for the voice of all French composers since the eighteenth century, he wrote a large number of art songs and a significant number of choral works in many different voicings. He composed a variety of different works including (but not limited to) ballets, operas, choral works and orchestra works. The Gloria is at the same time both secular and sacred. ...o, however during O come, O come Emmanuel Dr. Esther Morgan-Ellis brought out her cello to accompany the piece. My favorite work out of this section was Prayer by Rene Clausen. This selection is polyphonic and the singers change pitch frequently. The piece is sacred and would be presented in a church by a choir sometimes they are in harmony but in various sections only the altos will sing and then the sopranos will follow a couple of beats later.
Overall the Fall concert was an excellent presentation of many different works and an enjoyment to attend. The UNG singers and Le Belle Voci’s hard work really paid off as they continued to wow the audience (including myself) with their immense talent. Even though the first work they presented (Gloria) may have been one of the toughest they had done you would have never had guessed that it was any trouble at all for them.
On November 16th, 2013, I attended a concert choir, fall choral concert. This event took place on the Wheaton College Campus, in the Edman Chapel at 7:30 pm. The chapel was well-lit, with long pews for the audience to be seated. The concert began with the audience looking up into a balcony, where the ensemble stood in neat rows. They watched the conductor, who stood on a stage in front of the audience, waiting for their cue.
The concert began with an incredibly brief introduction from the president of the Rochester Oratorio Society, after which the society performed a piece that is not listed on the program. After hearing the raw talent the choir displayed in their first performance the crowd praised them, and at this time a representative from the city’s mayor office took the stage and presented the society with a proclamation. The proclamation was on behalf of the city offices and expressed thanks for their 70 years of musical performances and education. Afterwards the society performed Norman Dello Joio’s “A Jubilant Song,” which served as a transition for the Houghton College Choir to take the seats of the men’s choral section. The college choir was approximately a third the size of the society choir, but still managed to perform with a lot of talent. The Houghton College Choir performed Kenneth Jennings’ “The Lord is the Everlasting God” and Larry Farrow’s “Give Me Jesus.” After a quick intermission the Rochester Oratorio Society took to the stage to perform Brahm’s Requiem, which is typically performed with an orchestra, but in their rendition a two person piano served as a replacement. The 17th annual Sphinx Orchestra Finals Competition Concert has changed my perspective on classical music. I fully enjoyed the performance and might even consider going to next year’s performance. The young musician upheld incredible talent and the orchestra was just as unbelievable. I applaud the Sphinx Orchestra for putting on such a miraculous performance that anyone would enjoy a classical concert.
The first piece was the prelude from Afternoon of a Faun by Claude Debussy. This piece was in contrast with the others in the program because it is very soft and doesn’t have a defined form or beat. To start with, American Fanfare was created in the year 2006 and was embraced by a Lieutenant Colonel is a wonderful experiences. It was created by the conductor Jim Stephenson, with the rest of the performers, and they should give themselves a pat on the back for creating a new aura around the concert with such an amazing melody in so many ranges of ascending. Yet, the music was able to lead in the making of rhythms to be in a constant motion between adagio, andante, and allegro. Making the audience feel as if they are on the edge of their seats and feeling the homophonic texture. It adds dynamic qualities to the music by having the brass instrument and the woodwind instrument playing the same piece over and over one another as if challenging
I have been to many different concerts throughout my life but this year I experienced two exceptionally unique ___ that I had never seen before. The first one was a spectacular chamber recital that took place at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra performed by pianist Yefim Bronfman and violist-violinist Pinchas Zukerman. The program included Schubert's Violin Sonatina No. 2 in A Minor, Beethoven's Violin Sonata No. 7 in C Minor, and Brahms’ Viola Sonata No. 1 in F Minor. The second was a performance by the notable quartet “Anonymous 4” presented by the Universality of Chicago at the Rockefeller Memorial Chapel. The program included a series of medieval French motets from the 13th Century French polyphony, taken from the Montpellier Codex. The two performances were extremely different in nature and but at the same time very similar in what they were trying to achieve. For instance, while the first concert consisted entirely of an instrumental performance, the other was exclusively vocal. Eastern Washington University Department of Music presented a program of Opera works by Giacomo Puccini, Aron Copland, W.A. Mozart, John Dowland, Franz Shubert, Maurice Ravel, and Robert Schumann on Friday, March 7, 6:30 p.m., in the Music Building, Recital Hall. These Opera works were sung by Senior Recitalist, Alexandra Rannow.
The concert started with a religious piece called Profanation from Jeremiah and it was based on a biblical story of a prophet named Jeremiah and his story in Jerusalem. This music piece tends to be a folk music. The music piece is managed to be divided into three sections, prophecy, profanation, and lamentation. The song starts with a solo horn fading in slowly playing over for couple seconds until a solo flute takes the roll along with a softer drum roll leading to a gathering of bassoons and clarinets.Also, the trombone enters in a high pitch increasing the song tempo.The melody throughout the song was lead by the flutes in first and then by the violins. The symphony ends with a three-note motif in a melodic gesture leading the song to end with a quiet tone.The second music piece is called candidate suite and it was conducted by Clare Grundman and has five parts. The first part is called The best of all possible worlds. In addition to Westphalia choral, Auto da fe, Glitter and be gay, and Make our Garden grow. The song starts with a high timpani hit and a brass fanfare. The melody then is lead by the trombone, and the flute joins the trombone. The tempo and the melody tend to be fast and there was soloist by the flute, clarinet, and the bassoon. The piccolo then leads the melody and shapes a descending tone. The fall dance concert, Rise, was held in the University Theatre at California State University Dominguez Hills. The individuals that helped make this concert come to life are the faculty choreographers: Amy Michelle Allen, Marco Carreon, Sarah Cashmore, Jeff Hendrix, Erin Landry, Doris Ressl Acosta, and Kenneth Walker. They were accompanied by two senior student choreographers, Alanna Neely-Sanchez and Mavra Pedraza.

On Wednesday, May 23rd, I attended the College Choir concert in the Reamer Campus Center. The choir performed a variety of songs, ranging from pieces in Latin to traditional American folksongs. Two of the pieces featured solos, and one even featured percussion instruments. Mrs. Elinore Farnum provided piano accompaniment for each of the songs, and performed beautifully. I was extremely impressed by the talented choir members and their ability to sing such a varied range of songs.
The first piece on the program was Polonaise from Eugene Onegin (1878). This piece is from the Romantic period composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikavosky (1840-1893). Very short piece probably around six minutes. The variations and the interesting theme made this piece the most interesting among the other compositions despite the length of this piece, but it was amusing. The piece started with trumpets playing short high notes as an introductory, with the accompaniment of violins playing quick short notes. It sounds like if it was played in a major key, very cheerful and very fast like if the tempo is Vivace. Moreover, trumpets throughout the piece reinforce the harmony. Throughout the piece varies styles were used such as legato (smooth connected style).The texture of this piece is homophonic ( one line of real interest with accompaniment). The rhythm of the piece is really catchy, pretty much predictable; most of the piece variations are centered on the main theme, but it is very pleasing to the ears (consonant).
For this concert report I chose to go to a performance of student composers held at the Kimball Recital Hall. I chose this one because I wanted to see some of the talent that my peers have in the music realm, and also it was one of the only concerts I have been able to attend because I usually work at night. It was impressive to hear pieces composed by students. I cannot imagine creating something as complex as a musical composition, much less actually performing it, so this aspect of the concert was particularly awe-inspiring. There was a large attendance, and I think that much of the audience consisted of friends of the composers and/or performers. I went with three friends, who I convinced by telling it would be interesting to see student composers.
