Harry Potter used to live in Godric's Hollow with his parents, until his parents were killed by Voldemort. After his parents death, Harry Potter lived with his Aunt Petunia, Uncle Vernon, and his cousin Dudley in Privet Drive, that lies in the southeast of England. At age eleven, Harry lives at his school, Hogwarts. Hogwarts is somewhere in Scotland, the exact location is a secret. You could say that the story is set in the UK.

In movies, novels, and life, people are named as heroes. The heroes we establish and the heroes we recognize, however, may not meet the criteria for a mythic hero. A mythic hero ventures forth on his journey, and comes forth from the hero’s path to greatness. Joseph Campbell, a mythologist who studied many of the great human myths and religious tales, realized, in studying these myths and tales, that there were certain steps that every hero went through. Campbell called this “The Hero’s Journey”; it is based on Carl Jung's idea that all human beings have an archetype. After Campbell studied a lot of the great myths and realized this pattern, he published his findings in his book The Hero with a Thousand Faces. Ever since then, authors have used “The Hero’s Journey” as an outline to tell their stories. “It is important to note that not all of these individual steps are present in every hero’s tale, nor is it important that they be in this exact order” (Vogler 20). The Hero with a Thousand Faces gives a sense of significance as it looks into the inner mind and soul. The author, Joseph Campbell, performs two extraordinary accomplishments: compelling his readers that myth and dream, those are the most effective and everlasting forces in life and a unification of mythology and psychoanalysis with a gripping narrative. One well-known example of “The Hero’s Journey” from popular culture is the Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, by J.K. Rowling. In the novel, Harry Potter, the main character, is the chosen one and “The Hero’s Journey” applies to his life from the moment he is attacked by He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named as a baby.
Setting (time): This story starts with Vonnegut writing in first person and is set in 1968. The rest of the storyline is jumbled up as Billy is “caught in time”. It goes from meticulous descriptions of war experiences in 1944-1945, to skipping around his whole life from childhood in the 1920’s to death in 1976.
With his encounter with Dobby, the house elf, Harry cannot help but feel left out and unwanted. This feeling is added to by the hatred that his foster family, the Dursleys, share for him. Dudley, Harry's cousin, basically rubs the fact that Harry has no letters from his friends on his face. To add to Harry's unease and loneliness, is the fact that Harry's birthday has arrived with no more acknowledgement. Later, when Dobby casts a spell in the house, Harry is blamed by the wizard community, as if it’s his fault.
In the article “Doubling, Transfiguring, and Haunting: The Art of Adapting Harry Potter for Film” by Michael K Johnson the focus is on the third Harry Potter Movie, Prisoner of Azkaban. The question posed throughout the article is how do adaptions from books to film allow us to move beyond our one way of viewing and understanding the story? Johnson answers this question through discussing the use of time throughout the Harry Potter book and the different filming techniques used to create time changing in the film and comparing the film to the the movie The 400 Blows.
Through a magical doorway, past the golden thrones, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe was created by C.S. Lewis, in 1950, in England. Over the course of the past 64 years, this book has become one of the most famous books in the world. Lewis was “one of the most commercially successful authors” (The Life & Faith of C.S. Lewis: The Magic Never Ends). The hidden archetypes and intricate themes in this book are what sets it apart from others.
Ever since J.K. Rowling first introduced Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in 1997, children and adults have read and loved the series. It has gained such popularity that all of the books have been made into major motion pictures, and a Harry Potter attraction has been opened in Universal Studios, Florida. Though the readers love Rowling’s intricate and exciting story lines, many controversies have arisen from these stories, not only in the United States, but also in various countries around the world. Perhaps the biggest controversy is the religious implications perceived by some critics. Although these critics believe that the series promotes paganism and encourages evil actions, these theories should not be taken so seriously.
According to the textbook’s fantasy fiction characteristic of escape, “fantasy can take us far away from our everyday world, to times that never were, to places that never existed; it lets us forget our everyday routines, our frustrations, our anxieties”(p. 205). Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, like other fantasy books, help children escape and explore another world, even if that world is not real. Karin Slaughter a mystery novelist said, “ Reading is not just an escape. It is access to a better way of life.” Being able to invest in characters and a story is an escape for a child that does not make it a bad thing. Reading does let children into a world they wish to be a part of, based on the fact that there is magic and characters they wish they could meet. For instance, children invest in the characters of Harry and Ron, because Harry is the brave, courageous friend, while Ron is terrified of everything, but sticks by Harry no matter what happens. J.K. The Triwizard Tournament was held in Hoggwarts. This game amid the three biggest European magic schools was initiated about seven hundred years ago. One person should be assigned by one college and the Goblet of Fire used to designate three students for this competition. Three guys would compete in three categories of magic. The game was so serious that it stipulated the minimum age and the health conditions of the contestants.
Within the story of Harry Potter there are many concepts to be noted. This book is interesting and very different from any other book. These many concepts will tell you about some of these strange things that goes on.
One of the hardest things to do in life is to realize that something needs to be changed and to complete the change. It is difficult to understand sometimes, that there is need for change; many people will not even know that they are wrong and need changing or be against change completely. But it is important to continuously create change and understand why change is important. There are three reasons that I believe would cause someone to struggle to create change: The environment around the person changes, they become more educated, and they can no longer suffer in their position.
The Wizard of Oz was directed by Victor Fleming and was released in 1939. The movie is about Dorothy Gale, a young girl living on a farm in Kansas with her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry. Dorothy gets into some trouble with her neighbor, Miss Gulch, but everyone else on the farm is too busy to pay attention to her. Miss Gulch arrives with the sheriff to take away Dorothy’s dog Toto, because he bit her leg. Toto escapes the sheriff and Dorothy decides to run away with Toto. She meets a fortune teller who makes her, falsely, believe that Aunt Em is ill. So she runs home straight away, but as she gets there a tornado starts coming up. Not being able to get into the cellar, she is knocked out by flying debris and awakens to the house being carried away by the twister. The house lands in the World of Oz in Munchkin Land. Dorothy is greeted by Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, and the Munchkins. Dorothy is treated like a heroine because she killed the Wicked Witch of the East. Glinda transfers the witch’s ruby slippers to Dorothy’s feet, and the Wicked Witch of the West swears revenge on her. Dorothy is told to follow the yellow brick road to the Emerald City and talk to the Wizard of Oz to get her back home. On the way, she befriends the brainless Scarecrow, the heartless Tin Man, and the cowardly Lion. They get into some trouble, along the way, but they get to the Wizard. He said that he wouldn’t help unless they return with the broom of the Wicked Witch of the West. After a lot of danger and the kidnapping of Dorothy, her new friends save her and Dorothy kills the evil witch. The witch’s guards rejoice and give Dorothy the broom. JK Rowling is one of the most influential authors of our time, breaking boundaries and creating an alternate reality in a world far from anyones imagination. The series she is most well known for is the Harry Potter series. The series is seven books accompanied by eight movies. Harry Potter tickles the imagination and steps out of the bounds of normal children’s literature. Not only does it stir some intellectual thinking but at the same time entertains the reader in a fun and unique way. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone sets new rules in children’s literature; it is truly a masterpiece full of so much imagination and fantasy.
