Forgive and forget; words to live by right? Not in the world of Hamlet. Revenge can cause people to go to extreme lengths in order to get even with a person who has wronged them or someone they love in some way. The ghost of King Hamlet wants revenge on his brother Claudius because he murdered him in order to become the new King of Denmark (Shakespeare 23). The ghost tells his son Hamlet to avenge his death by killing Claudius, and tries to convince him even more so to kill Claudius by telling him what he wants to hear; that Claudius is an adulterous, incestuous beast (Shakespeare 24). As understood by many, revenge is a felt by those who believe they have been wronged by another in some way. They have the feeling of needing to do harm in some way that will hurt the wrongdoer as much or more than it hurt them. Revenge is not a word of understanding and forgiveness, but the exact opposite. This link opens up a door of interesting possibilities. One of the primary subjects of study of OCD is having anger and aggression. This could perceivably mean that the main cause of feelings of revenge is caused by feelings of anger and aggression. If scientists know what causes it, they are that much closer to finding ways to cure it. Revenge can possibly cured through the process of forgiveness. First, one must accept that what the person has done has been done and cannot be undone. Second, try to recognize that their life is bigger than this issue and they can and are able to move on from it. Third, through trial and error, learn to live with the damage that another has done to you and use it to your advantage. Learn from it, and become a stronger
