Recommended: The development of the travel and tourism industry

With the emerging channels to obtain travel information, people from different social classes have more outbound travelling experiences compared with those who lived decades ago. This phenomenon can be proved by prosperous tourism industries in all regions including both developing and developed countries. Living in 21th century, I am one of the beneficiaries from technological developments such as invention of aircrafts and fuels bring convenience to worldwide tourists. It serves as a driving force towards my graduation trip to Taiwan which will be used as an example to illustrate the impacts of consumption in travelling, food and gifts. This reflective essay aims to investigate the implications behind certain selection of consumer goods or services on the grounds of the above experiences. It will suggest alternatives to better construct a sustainable environment in the future at the end of essay.

Owing to the advancement in transportation, geographical mobility of people is gradually enhanced and they are able to travel around the globe freely for leisure; for instance, the flight time between Hong Kong and Taiwan is merely one and a half hour instead of a month travelling by cruises before the invention of airplanes. More than that, two-way flight tickets travelling from Hong Kong to Taiwan cost HKD$2000 on average nowadays. Therefore, travel is no longer solely confined to middle and upper classes but opened to various types of people including students. Nowadays, majority of high school graduates tend to take graduation trips. I have also planned a senior class trip with my peers because of this prevailing trend. Thus, it is recommended that holidaymakers should not overlook the environmental effect of each types of transport modes when they plan destinations for next trips. We should consider the ecological capacity of society through minimizing greenhouse gases production in transportation. It is known that human generally self-centered and consider their own needs instead of the ecosystem. Therefore, we can donate to non-governmental organizations for the purpose of carbon offset. Despite the introduction of carbon offset programmes by several major airlines, passengers could not trace both the partner organizations and usage of donation. However, there are alternative green groups which clearly state particular carbon offset projects and the motivations behind them.

In order to differentiate between leisure and tourism it should be recognised that leisure often involves activities enjoyed during an individual’s free time, whereas tourism commonly refers to organised touring undertaken on a commercial basis. Development in the two areas could be attributed to changing patterns in working lives within the last four decades. Generally, people now have more disposable wealth, work shorter hours, receive longer, paid annual leave, retire earlier and have greater personal mobility. In addition, according to Marshall & Wood (1995), the growth of the tourist industry per se can be associated, in part, with the concentration of capital; the emergence of diversified leisure based companies, sometimes within wider corporate conglomerates and often associated with particular airlines. Furthermore, the development of tourism can generate employment both directly, in jobs created in the hotels, restaurants etc, and indirectly, through expenditure on goods and services in the local area.
