Brandotti's conception of the nomad, as a sort of allegory for post modernist subjectivity, is very interesting. It liberates the mind from the idea of nomadism being related to physical disconnectedness and movement, to something more akin to the cultural identity of the nomad, as being in a state of flux that does not fall into the psychological ruts and categories that typically govern our thought patterns. She demonstrates throughout the essay how we may apply this sort of thought to avoid ethnocentric patterns of thought when we concern ourselves with aesthetics, language, and even every day interactions. It deals intensively with applying this idea of the nomad, and remaining nomadic in our patterns of thought to deal with epistemological study and remaining subjective in these pursuits. By doing this, as Brandotti demonstrates through her writing, we can break free from socially encoded modes of thought. In Coelho’s story, Santiago is faced with recurring dreams which lead him to ‘’traverse the unknown’’ in search of a treasure buried in Egypt, the metaphor for universal connection, and in doing so, comes to the unrelenting realisation of spiritual transcendence. After arriving at the assumed geographical location of the treasure ‘’several figures approached him’’. They demand the boy keep searching for this treasure as they are poor refugees and in need of money, but as Santiago does, he finds nothing. Then, after relentless digging through the night ‘’as the sun rose, the men began to beat the boy’’ , finally relenting with the truth, Santiago reveals his dreams to the travellers. In doing so, Santiago finds out that these men had also been faced with recurring dreams measured around the place where the boy had undergone his own, both relative to hidden treasure. Throughout history, Georg Simmel and W.E.B. Du Bois have had a substantial influence on imperative theories and concepts developed in the area of social sciences. Two of the most significant and distinguished concepts fostered by both of these theorists are the concepts of “double consciousness” and “the stranger”. In this essay, I will be analyzing each of these works to draw upon differences and similarities concerning the two. The resemblances I will be expanding on are the usage of the paradoxical figure, which both theorists discuss in their theories, and the coexisting sensation of division from conventional society. The contrast between the two theories in which I will be exploring is the perception that conventional society holds on these paradoxical figures. In Simmel works of the stranger, is seen as a beneficial addition to our society. But on the other hand, in Du Bois work of the seventh son is viewed more as a liability on society.

It is given that as we go through our lives and encounter different experiences our identity of yourselves and where we belong may change. As this happens we may gain or relinquish new values and from this identity and image our influenced. 'A bad self-image and low self-esteem may form part of identity?but often the cause is not a loss of identity itself so much as a loss of belonging.'; Social psychologists suggest that identity is closely related to our culture. Native people today have been faced with this challenge against their identity as they are increasingly faced with a non-native society. I will prove that the play The Rez Sisters showed this loss of identity and loss of belonging. When a native person leaves the reservation to go and start a new life in a city they are forced to adapt to a lifestyle they are not accustomed to. They do not feel as though they fit in or belong to any particular culture. They are faced with extreme racism and stereotypes from other people in the nonreservational society.

In this essay I am going to consider Spivak’s theory and perspectives of the subaltern in terms of Kazuo Ishiguro’s two novels A Pale View of Hills and Never Let Me Go. I will be considering Spivak’s theories of “post-colonialism”, “essentialism” as well as revising her essay on “Can the Subaltern Speak?” I will be focusing on defining the subaltern characters and their role in Ishiguro’s novel and how they deal with their status as subaltern or whether they are even aware of this constraint that they are faced with. As well as considering the narrative power that Ishiguro has given them in his novels simply by giving them a “voice”.
