A Multitude of Meanings: Analyzing Responses to the Fundamental Question of the Meaning of Life There are many fundamental and important philosophical questions that provide the foundation for the study of human thought. Questions of morality, knowledge, existence, free will, necessity, and science have been debated for centuries by some of the greatest and influential minds in Western society. One of these fundamental problems to be solved is finding the meaning of life. There are many opinions and answers to this question that have been provided. Whether one finds the meaning of life in the supernatural, a legacy left behind, happiness, or finds no possibility of meaning whatsoever, I am dubious that only one of these responses is correct. There are many subsections in finding this happiness, whether it be through a search of beauty, accumulating all of the knowledge possible in your span on earth, or creating the most reliable and stable relationships with other people in your life. When I asked various people in my life what they believed to be the meaning of life, many of them responded within this sector of thought. The most popular responses included, surrounding yourself with those who fuel your passions, leaving a legacy to the world through your offspring or work, and finding motivation in your chosen career path. To further explain, one person said “The meaning of life for me is a combination of surrounding myself with people who make me better and happier in my life, and finding a fulfilling sense of work. As some people say I want a career and not a job, I want to be genuinely happy with the people and things in my life. I want to have the motivation to get up in the morning.”. While another friend said that even if she didn’t find the meaning of life for herself, the least she could do was pass down her knowledge to the next generation so that something she completed made a mark on the world before
