The Victorian Era was not only founded problems but also helped create medical breakthroughs that will last forever or be improved upon. Joseph Lister, a very well known surgeon of the time, had revolutionized sanitation of wounds post surgery. “Not until Joseph Lister demonstrated in the 1860s that hospital infections could be prevented by the lavish use of carbolic acid as an antiseptic and hospitals became gradually safer.” (Health, Medicine, and Society in Victorian England p. 25-26) Lister wanted a safer more sterile environment to do surgery and for his patients to recover in after the procedures. So, unlike doctors of his time, he used carbolic acid as an antiseptic on wounds. Dr. Lister first experimented with carbolic acid as an antiseptic but would eventually work with other things like chloride of zinc on some wounds. “After reading Pasteur’s work, published in 1861, Lister had devolved the process of antisepsis. He began with carbolic acid as antiseptic agent, but went on to test other agents as well.” (Health, Medicine, and Society in Victorian England p. 30) He became very famous for his process antisepsis, which is still partly used in modern medicine. Carbolic acid though was Lister’s favorite or most used antiseptic on wounds. Dr. Joseph Lister again used carbolic acid even more after Pasteur published another study. “Also in the 1860s, surgeon Joseph Lister applied Pasteur’s theory to the problem of wound infections, using the disinfectant carbolic acid to kill germs and prevent wound infection.” (Health, Medicine, and Society in Victorian England p. 65) He thought the use of this specific substance would give his patients not only the best results but also the prevented the terrifying “hospital gangrene.” Many p...

..., Dr. John Snow, a very famous anesthesiologist, was well known for his administration of ether and chloroform, which he strongly favored over any other anesthetic. Wilhelm Roentgen made an absolutely amazing medical discovery in 1895 that would change medicine significantly. “X-rays were discovered in 1895 by Wilhelm Roentgen (1845-1923) who was a professor at Wuerzburg University in Germany.” (NDE/NDT Resource Center) The x-ray machine is so uniquely irreplaceable that if Wilhelm had not discovered the x-ray, medicine would be totally changed even though another person probably would just discover it later. Although, the x-ray helped doctors diagnose people correctly and learn more about the body to help improve medicine. The whole entire nineteenth century was known for it’s worst problems but it also created a brand new perspective of public health and medicine.
One of the leading surgeons of the time was also the first surgeon to use antiseptics in surgery. Joseph Lister believed that infections were a result of bacteria. He used various methods to fight the bacteria, constantly changing his methods over the years. He even went so far as to use vaporizing sprays in the surgery areas (Connor). His original method, developed in March of 1847, to keep a wound sterilized was to “[use] [carbolic acid] to clean a wound, and then [apply] a piece of lint, soaked in the acid, as a dressing, covered by a slightly larger piece of thin tin or sheet lead in order to prevent evaporation of the acid.
In the 1700’s things were very different to life today; this included the medicine of the time. The idea of medicine came from the Greeks and they came up with the four humours (consisting of water, fire, air and earth.) By the 1840’s most anaesthetics were accepted as James Simpson presented a powerful case for them; however they didn’t make surgery safer and the amount of people dying from operations increased. The final breakthrough for anaesthetics was when Queen Victoria accepted the use of Chloroform during the delivery of her eighth child. Even though being anesthetised was less painful surgeons did not take any precautions to protect open wounds and infections were spread by the reuse of old bandages!
And if you were lucky enough to survive through the pain of surgery you were certain to die from infection. Infection was more common than it should've been, especially when it comes from a hospital where they would expect to recieve a cure from. Well, they were wrong. Surgeries at this time were never sterile, Lister was the one who changed that. Just think about it, let's say you got stabbed in the stomach. You would have been treated with the same dirty used tools that were maybe used to stitch up someone's arm who had a blood infection. Well, now you have that infection and so does the person after

During the 1800’s majority of people thought the infections that were killing people after surgery were due to the chemical damage from the air. Medical instruments were not sterilized before surgery and the doctors/surgeons were not even required to wash their hands before surgery in this specific era. Joseph’s idea for having sterilization processes in an operating room was inspired by an article written by Louis Pasteur in the 1860’s ("Joseph Lister" Famous Biologists). Louis Pasteur was one of the many scientists discovering new scientific facts around the mid 1800’s. Pasteur was working on the
Anesthesia was one of the first medical inventions to be discovered during the industrial revolution. The drug was invented by William Morton, an American dentist in 1846, who first demonstrated it’s use
My themed research project will centre its focus upon the link between Riot Grrrl and its relation to Third-Wave Feminism. Primarily I aim to analyse Riot Grrrl’s music scene, but also its subculture mentioning its DIY punk ethic, political activism and most importantly its influential Zine network. However the purpose of this report is to demonstrate a grounded understanding in three research methodologies and how I will apply each one in regards to my own project. Firstly I’ll investigate the advantages of an Instrumental Case Study, looking at how it proliferates, rather than narrows a given field of study. Secondly I will delve into Symbolic Interactionism referring to some influential figures involved within this methodology, as well as providing an example in regards to my own topic. Finally I will clarify the subtle difference between Text Linguistics and Discourse Analysis, concluding as to why I have settled upon the latter in my own research.
An author’s way of writing and portraying a character are one of the important things to note when reading a novel. Whether they use third or first person as their view point, have their main character have an underlying dark secret that is not revealed until the end of the novel. However an author wishes to write their novel, there is always a drawback to it. Kazuo Ishiguro’s way of writing his novel Never Let Me Go is in a first person perspective where the narrator, Kathy H., reassess her life of being a clone but the way Kathy remembers and discusses her memories of living in Hailsham is hindered by the fact she inputs her own feelings and thoughts into what happened in the past.
...l as salt could keep wounds clean, and although the process would still be painful, that pain was insignificant compared to pain while in surgery; operations in hospitals were often carried out while the patient remained conscious. When dealing with wounds, in the opinion of insert name here, inflamed wounds should never be closed, but rather dressed with gauze and a varnish, to allow for movement, but also provide support. Infected tissue was drained, while extremely infected tissue was cut off the body completely.
How would today’s world be if the technology that is known and loved by millions suddenly vanished? Could the world re-adapt to the lack of technology, or would it plummet into Darkness and Despair? In actuality, if someone can develop artificial intelligences to a certain limit he or she can prevent many of the world’s future problems. In a sense, Mankind can benefit greatly from the further use and development of Artificial Intelligence although some people would have one believe that the further development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) can endanger large areas around the world.
In the past, disabled students—students with physical and emotional/behavioral problems—were often segregated from the “normal classroom environments.” The segregation of students, either through special schools or home-based tutoring, was justified for various reasons. Separate schools provided specialized services, tailored to meet the educational needs of children with a specific type of handicap. Moreover, this freed the regular public schools of having to provide services and infrastructure needs of the disabled student population (Circle of Inclusion Project, 2003).
Recent studies on parental involvement in education have found that there are many benefits for both the student and the adult when parents become involved in their children’s education. Without parent support, it is very difficult for a child to be motivated. From what I have seen growing up, only a small percentage of students are self-motivated, so it is absolutely vital that parents assist in the motivation process. I found this table to be particularly interesting and important.
The word anesthesia is used to describe the process of making a patient unconscious which allows them to be free of surgical pain. There are two main types of anesthetics that were used when for surgical anesthesia, ether and chloroform, that developed around the same time. They were both developed in the 1840’s, but chloroform was used more often since it worked faster and was non-flammable. These anesthetics were indispensible tools to the medical doctors during the Civil War. Boston dentist William T.G. Morton was f...

The term management accounting refers to producing information to internal sources. These internal sources can be top-level managers or floor supervisors. The information that is produced is used for planning and controlling the company’s actions while also producing information that aids in the decision making process. A management accounting systems is used as an aide in this process. Management accounting systems can produce information for the costs of goods, products and services, and other departments in the company. A management cost accounting system produces information regularly for budgeting, performance, and the production of cost reports (Talha, Raja, Seetharaman, 2010, P. 83).
